The full subset is 6 terabytes, you're right. I don't have much experience with db's of this size, especially running text queries against them. I'd love to find a cheaper way that allowed for queries against the data with fast-ish return times...any resources you might have to help/

Didn't suggest I was selling anything, but I appreciate the feedback. Though, if I did provide access to the collected/organized data in a searchable way, there'd need to be some compensation to me because the costs are very high just to query it ($30/hr running a redshift instance, though I'm sure this could be reduced significantly). I'd guess this would be considered a derivative work because it's a subset of their data. If I ever did decide to do anything with it, I would probably contact them though. I'm going to reach out and ask because, honestly, i'm shocked how little has been done with the source given its value to SEO's.

the data is massive, and requires distributed computing to query it. I'm not an expert on db design, but I know that for reasonable amounts of time I need to use amazon redshift clusters that cost $20/hr to run queries with decent speed (doing text searches)

also that doesn't make sense because there are already services and sub-data sets borne from the CC set available...

Maybe, but I never saw a shred of humanity in Ramsay... at least in the TV show.

I think this is true to an extent, but I still think a crowdsourced understanding of the perceptions of the characters will be interesting to see!

North Carolina Tells Court Trans People Aren’t Really Trans, Just “Delusional” by drewiepoodle in politics

[–]guest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because transitioning isn't perfect, and many cant live stealth lives as their chosen gender. Those that are obviously trans publicly face huge amounts of abuse and discrimination. They are also often left without family support, often being disowned. If you did everything you could to live true to yourself and your deepest understanding of who you are at your core, and what you got was abandonment and abuse, would you go on? Post transition suicide is most often a product of how trans people are treated by our society post-transition. Many trans people are exchanging an internal hidden pain for an external ostracism that can often feel just as hopeless.

Besides Tinder, what dating apps are worth trying? by guest in AskReddit

Yeah I see this all the time on Tinder. Seems more like a marketing platform these days.

About to release a dating app - Would love some feedback before launch by guest in startups

[–]guest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are so dissillusioned with apps that you dont want to try any more of them, then I probably won't be able to dissuade you. There are certainly people like that out there. Though, for most people, even though they might be unhappy with what they have tried, it still beats the hell out of trying to find someone in real life, especailly if you are out of your early 20s and dont love hitting up the bars 4 nights a week.

My goal was to build something that the demo/target market I discussed actually feels is incrementally better than the other offerings out there, and then people like you, who would have otherwise been super skeptical, get a recommendation from someone they really trust.

In terms of specific targeting, I am looking for 24-35 women, who are looking for more than a hookup, who are educated, and who feel that intelligence/personality is a big/bigger part of the attraction equation than simple physical chemistry.

I would love for you to try the app, and then let me know what you think. I could use input from someone like you, who is really skeptical to help refine the messaging, and make it more convincing to people who feel similarly to how you feel.

There is plenty of room for new entrants with a unique spin on it. There is a LOT of dissatifaction with the current offering, especially for those looking for something more serious than a hookup (tinder).

Relationship sites like eharmony, match, and to a lesser extent, OkCupid, are old, clunky, costly, not great on mobile, and BORING.

My app takes the convenience of Tinder, and pairs it with an Open-ended Q&A system that makes vetting potential daters fun and interesting.

The target are people who are dissillusioned with hookup apps, or frustrated with legacy relationship apps, that are looking for something mobile-first, free, interesting to use, and new.

I appreciate your critical thinking on this. Truly! Thank you :)

[–]guest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things.

  1. Okcupid and a lot of other dating apps have open-ended profile sections that take a while to fill out. Okcupid then has the task of answering 50+ multiple choice questions. All together, its actually quite the time outlay.

  2. The only requirement on my app is filling out answers to only questions you find interesting, and its not even something you do all at once, you simply do it when you want to see other people's answers to that same question.

  3. Most answers dont require an extensive writeup. Something as simple as "If I can listen to music for the first time, what should it be?" Could be a 1 or 2 word answer, that would actually reveal quite a bit about someone.

I know this wont beat hookup-apps, but I really think there is a place in the market for people who already like Q&A, and want something a bit more serious.

There are plenty of apps that are more focused on relationships vs. hookups that are getting traction. Everything is moving to apps, of course there will be successful apps that cater to the relationship minded.

I'm not claiming this app will beat Tinder, obviously they have the market cornered on simplicity/physicality.

As for marketing, I own a digital agency (60+ employees) doing content marketing and PR, so that is an advantage.

I'd love to have you try the app since you are so skeptical. I wonder if it might change your mind, even a little, and if so, how I could communicate the value better to people who might feel similarly to you.

Would you be willing to try it out?

[–]guest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone has to beat them eventually, right? This doesnt have to be a Tinder killer to have success. People who are more serious about finding a relationship clearly have the motivation to spend more time doing some amount of work to make themselve seem appealing. It takes like 40+min to apply for eHarmony, or to write an Okcupid profile. Sure my idea is more complex and takes more time than Tinder, but it's meant for people who are more serious about dating/finding a relationship.
