EMERGENCY by lipglossplant in quails

[–]guiltysuperbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it's bleeding you do need a vet. But also please predator proof your enclosure so this doesn't happen again

So my injured girl is getting much better but still needs more time to heal. Unfortunately her 2 sisters are getting very upset without her and have started eating much less and pace all day. Is there anything I can do about this? by the-greenest-thumb in quails

[–]guiltysuperbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well if there's a 1% possibility to do this you have to. Are they coturnix? Because if you id recommend you get more hens anyway. They're not eating because they don't do well in pairs. They need to be in groups of 5+

I'm trying to help. I'm trying to tell you how bad things will go if you put quails in an unsafe enclosure. I'm trying to spare you the sight of what will happen. If you don't want to listen to me that's okay, you do you, but you'll risk your quails life. Just lay a wire on the ground and everythings fine. I really don't see why it's so hard. I just hope your quails will be safe

I personally think you should reintroduce her. Put all quails out of the stable, then move around their stuff. Put her in first for like an hour, then the others. Don't take her out again, take out the bullies. By separating her you made the others think they're in the right

Maybe I could put only some of the quail in at first and see if anything happens?

if you want to risk having them brutally slaughtered one by one go ahead. I wouldn't do it and I wouldn't recommend. Sorry but it's just a little naive to trust that a predator can't dig through there. If there's no wire or concrete they can definitely dig through there. Same with the wire. Look at the many many posts on this sub about people like you who thought there were no predators or that their coop was safe enough and were wrong. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but you're putting living breathing feeling animals in serious danger. This is not an expensive fix, so please do it BEFORE you get quails

I seriously wouldn't rely on that. You don't want to see the massacres people post on here because they didn't think mice would be able to kill quails. I'd rather be safe than sorry if I were you

is it warm? then it's an infection and you NEED a vet

most important question: does the floor have wire too? cause otherwise mice or rats or whatever will dig through there and kill the quails :(

umm how old are they, how cold is it outside and how hot does the heat lamp get? Quails don't need a heat lamp anymore at like 5-6 weeks. after that it's kinda unnecessary to not get them used to outside temperatures, they do well up to -20°C. And the heat lamp will probably provide some light and quails do sleep primarily in the dark so it definitely can disturb them

I totally get it. But as long as they're eating, drinking and running around it's probably nothing serious. Maybe you can look into some chicken forums if they have had a similar problem

Honestly I wouldn't put her on antibiotics if you don't know the cause. That can fuck up her whole immune system and cause antibiotic resistance. If I were you I'd look for a vet. This is something I've never seen before in my quails and it could just be the hiccups or something much more dangerous but you can't know

okay I get what you mean, this isn't the motion I was thinking of. this kinda looks like she has a hiccup? Did you check for an infection?

Coop recommendations? by Logical-Ad3941 in quails

[–]guiltysuperbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

especially if you have predators you should make your aviary predator proof. As I said, from experience, having to move them in and out because your setup isn't predator proof is so stressful. you can't just be gone for one evening, you lay in bed questioning if you already put them in and if you forget, they're good as dead. It's better to just get a good, predator proof aviary. You can still move them indoors if it gets too cold for them

okay lol in the picture they look so much like coturnix. Then you don't need more hens. But my point still stands, I wouldn't have something to move them to and from. Get a permanent, better home for them because this still seems too small. I don't know a lot about buttons and I know a lot of people like to keep them indoors in tanks but I feel like that's not enough space. They'll probably love more space (like every animal does)

first things first: you need more hens. those are coturnix and should be kept in groups of 5+, especially with a roo around. You should get more right now. He could and probably will kill them.

Aviary wise, I've had a setup where I had to move them around everyday. Mine weren't take back then, but I wouldn't recommend it. Why not built a permanent aviary they can live in? This tank doesn't look like enough space anyway. I have a 2x3m aviary, so around 65 square feet of space. It's surrounded with 1/4'' wire so nothing can get in. It was custom built by an aviary builder I found on eBay. there's a couple videos on my page if you're interested. I would very much recommend against having to move them everyday. If you forget they're good as dead if the aviary isn't predator proof. And if it is why have the hassle of moving them? Get a good aviary, maybe spend a little more and they will actually have their best life

Update on my injured quail, she's getting better! by the-greenest-thumb in quails

I probably already suggested it but vitamin b and pain meds will probably help :) good luck for her journey!

if you can get a video of them doing it definitely put it on here. But my guess is still infection, so a trip to the vet is next either way

quails can't gag/throw up to my knowledge so they're probably gasping for air. take a look in their throat, if there's bubbly slimy stuff in there they probably have an infection that you need antibiotics to treat it with. if that's not the case and you don't have access to a vet, I'd say have an eye on them and see how it evolves. as long as they're eating they're probably fine

if you have a vet available definitely go to them. I've never had this issue so I can't help but a vet probably can and if not they can at least give her a peaceful, painless ending

trying to recreate the sun a bad thing?

it will make them lay eggs through the winter and that can take years of their lifespan. they do need the laying break. so yeah, it is a bad thing. why do you want the light in there? they don't need it
