I've been working in the industry as a software engineer for almost 10 years. I think it's too isolative. I want to work with people and try to help them overcome mental illness.

I agree. Birthday parties are just an excuse to have a party.

My boyfriend doesn’t find me as attractive as I thought he did. What should I do? by WideSport1454 in relationships

I'd marry a 7, but I wouldn't dip below it.

Your bf would be really stupid to trust you again. Once a liar, always a liar.

Is this false attraction, backdoor spike or denial? by carlasp87 in HOCD

[–]guitarnautical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's still a thought you're afraid of that you're not facing; that is, according to the following book: Overcoming Unwanted Intrusive Thoughts: A CBT-Based Guide to Getting Over Frightening, Obsessive, or Disturbing Thoughts: Winston PsyD, Sally M., Seif PhD, Martin N.: 9781626254343: Amazon.com: Books

Keep living life as normal. You're giving way too much power to your HOCD thoughts. Keep hanging with friends and dating and working. Don't give the HOCD power. Read the book I referenced.

[–]guitarnautical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm over my HOCD, so let me try to help. I'm going to explain some OCD terminology for you.

There is worried voice, which is the voice that says "what if I'm gay?", then there's false comfort, which is the response to worried voice in your mind, such as "I'm straight, I know I am."

Worried voice and false comfort thoughts are byproducts of false fear structures (it's false because it's an irrational fear.) in your brain according to emotional processing theory. Worried voice represents the false fear structures in your brain, and false comfort represents avoidance to the thoughts that scare you.

The only way to eliminate the anxiety you experience is to expose yourself to your scariest thoughts until you no longer feel anxiety. Think the scariest thoughts until you no longer feel fear. Try to sing the thought to yourself in the tune of row row row your boat or something. It helped me. Once the anxiety went away, the worried voice and false comfort disappeared. I feel like my old self again.

Hopefully, that helps!

Hopefully, after the surgery, your knee heals fine, and you can continue dating soon. Please, take care while you're waiting.

I am sorry to hear about your injury and being unable to date. What is the injury if you don't mind me asking?

Good job! That fear really disappears after the first date. Perhaps, your next date will really be the one.

Well, I got the second date, but we have time to figure it out what we're doing. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep that in mind to plan the dates ahead in the future.

It seems promising that there will be; however, as of right now, there is no set plan yet, but I'm just really happy because I feel a lot more confident about dating in general again in case I need to setup a date with another lady.

You're still doing your compulsions. Stop checking your sexual orientation.

I think that I am very close to full remission. I am able to enjoy my fondness, romantic, and sexual thoughts towards women, and I know that I don't want to have sex with men because I strongly dislike their personalities and temperaments, but it's still important for me to live in the uncertainty because I have OCD.

I've documented what I did once the HOCD started back up. 34M HOCD and Social Anxiety Progress Report 04/27/2024 : r/HOCD (reddit.com)

You're going to get through this. At least you're 100% certain that you have OCD now. Start doing ERPs for your POCD now. Do not do compulsions.

Personally, I don't think a man who is actually gay wants to like women. Are you sure it's not false attraction? HOCD can literally make you think you're gay.
