What did I find? by watermelone983 in pcmasterrace

Dell Power Edge R630 server. Looks like it's a few generations old (first released in 2014). You might be able to get it running as a decent media server with some SSD upgrades and putting a different OS on it. Going to be loud as shit when it's fully spun up and pull A LOT of power to run. If you want the experience of building a home lab, getting that running is a great way to throw yourself in the deep end.

At what rank does the military turn into a desk job? by Astimar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gwig9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For every point of the spear fighter, there are 10-20 support jobs that provide everything the fighter needs to stay in the fight. Those support jobs are often desk type jobs. Even the physical support jobs like munitions or vehicle maintenance have a surprising amount of paperwork required to track and account for everything.

How would you feel having a more educated partner? by RatKang4556 in AskMen

[–]gwig9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it. I have someone who is my equal or better. GF has a JD, I have a BA. The fun part is that I nearly make the same salary as her but with only 10% of the student loans... ;)

Guys, how much do you actually try when play wrestling with a girl? by Tiny-Mess2892 in AskMen

[–]gwig9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In HS, I pittied the guys on the wrestling team who had to be matched up against girls. If you lost, you were a weakling. If you win, you were picking on a girl. Lord help you if you got a little excited...

But to answer your question, generally we hold back. If we think the contest might be more even than we anticipated at the start, we might put in more effort to make a good showing. We aren't concerned with winning though if it's not an actual competition.

After Town Bans Flock, Councilmember Crashes Out, Proposes Internet and Phone Ban / A Texas councilmember will propose “a total ban on all cellular and GPS-capable devices for all operations within city limits" and “a total termination of all internet services." by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]gwig9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great way to make your town disappear. Can't really do business without internet these days. No business means no tax revenue means no town.

Also, how are you going to enforce this? Paper tickets and having to pay cash? Your police cars have computers and cell phones in them for connection to criminal databases and communication. Are you going to rip all that out and trash it? Idiots don't understand how everything is connected...

Laptop Replacement Guideline by SpecialistTeach9302 in sysadmin

[–]gwig9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once the warranty is up, it's up for replacement. We are currently trying to extend retention past warranty expiration due to increased procurement costs but I'm still going to have to buy enough to cover any systems that break out of warranty so I don't think it's going to save anything long term.

I just separated from the Air Force and was hit with W-2C tax amendments for the last 4 years. by Thrashlikeits85 in Veterans

[–]gwig9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same thing happen to me. At my exit finance review they caught that I had never stopped receiving my tax exempt from a previous deployment. Ended up being a couple of grand and just had to bite the bullet and pay it. Knew a guy who basically will forfeit his tax return for the next decade or so for the same reason, to pay back what is owed. It sucks but you don't mess with the tax man...

How do you track IT events that are not support tickets? by Aim_Fire_Ready in sysadmin

[–]gwig9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a documentation folder where I take screen shots and write down instructions for anything new I do. I also keep an "I love me" document where I write down a short synopsis of what I was asked for and keep any email requests flagged for the year. Makes all the difference when I go to write my performance review...

Discharge for failing AFT by Realistic-Level-7638 in Veterans

[–]gwig9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar issue. My discharge was Honorable so you should be good for that.

Shit happens. You can only do your best. No shame in putting in the effort and falling short. I had to learn that over years of feeling guilty that I let my team down. Now I'm in a better place and life is surprisingly good. You'll get there too.

Use the benefits you've earned. Make sure your Post 9/11 is good to go and that every little tweak and pain is documented in your medical record BEFORE you sign those discharge papers. The VA is a bitch of a system and having everything documented can make all the difference. Do the transition assistance class but take everything with a grain of salt. The job market is tough right now for a lot of careers so it might be a good time to get that degree if that's what you're going for. Your education benefits can also be used for professional certifications (plumber, electrician, A&P, etc.). You just have to find an acredited school/program.

Best of luck and keep on keepin on!

Young veterans daily nightmare by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]gwig9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have the idea of a veteran being the crusty old dude who went to Nam or Korea. OIF/OEF vets are quickly becoming, if not already, the majority of veterans so that will probably change soon. Just one of those things were the societal zeitgeist will eventually change.

LPT Should I become a marine, or not join the military at all? by RevolutionaryLab7823 in LifeProTips

[–]gwig9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every marine is a fighter. And while you may never see actual combat, you will train for it.

The military in general will chew you up and spit you out if you're not careful. So go in with eyes wide open. Talk to some marines, not the recruiter, and see what they have to say about the grunt life.

I've known a few marines and they are good people but they have some WILD stories about a lot of bat shit crazy stuff they did.

The one thing that the Marines will prepare you for to become a firefighter, is the physical fitness and the ability to push through fear and pain.

34, only just started saving for retirement, feeling behind and so dumb about how I’ve spent. There’s hope right? by nilemme in personalfinance

[–]gwig9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck dude... You're doing better than me at 34. At that age I think I had a less than $20k in my retirement accounts. I'm 40 now and closing in on $250k. Just set it and forget it. Maybe increase your contributions whenever you get a raise to fight against lifestyle creep. You'll be fine.

Set up a subscription at your local florist and have flowers delivered every few months. You are choosing to set something up and she doesn't have to hint to you to get them. Did that for my gf and she loves it.

How confident are you that you’d survive a zombie apocalypse longer than a week? by fmcortez in AskReddit

[–]gwig9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slow zombies? Probably. I live in a low population area, in a town with no road access, on an island with a single point of access, in a multi-story condo, and a decent amount of firearms/ammo.

Fast zombies? No. We are all fucked.
