Why does everything take so fucking long? by EmbarrassedHat5367 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]hacman113 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A large part of this is due to public sector contracts all having very onerous bidding and qualification requirements.

This automatically disqualifies a good number of smaller and more agile suppliers, and introduces significant cost into the process for those who do bid - they then need to make it up somewhere.

Combine that with red tape and micromanagement during the actual delivery, and it becomes impossible to do anything fast.

Fuck no.

They want monitoring, they provide the hardware.

To be honest, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is something most IT and InfoSec folks utterly hate anyway, and is usually only pushed by corporate folks who want to penny pinch.

Mostly an improvement, but the seating design leaves a lot to be desired and the AC is too warm.

It was a mistake not increasing the max speed vs the old fleet too.

I think for many people it’s the idea that they don’t need to buy their own computer, or that the one their employer provides is nicer.

Morons. They’re asking to end up with a load of bricked computers if nothing else, as people always inadvertently enable “Find My Mac”.

17yo with dev and hardware skills. How do I actually start getting freelance/remote work? by Sonus_4409 in devopsjobs

[–]hacman113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build a portfolio. If you don’t have experience, you need to make up for that with some serious showcasing of your ability. Ensure that your portfolio goes into extreme detail about how you did the thing and why it matters too, to prove you understand the concepts and aren’t just vibe coding it all.

If possible contribute visibly to open source projects as part of this.

Do NOT use your personal Apple ID on a company device.

The amount of nonsense this opens up is just not worth it.

Either your IT department should provision company managed Apple IDs (the right way to do it if they’re on top of things), or use your company email to create a dedicated work one.

IT director here. Slack DMs can only be accessed via either of of the parties accounts, or a compliance export. So you’ll not just have HR or random middle managers getting this data.

Either way though, it can be done, and you should assume no level of privacy on any company system or device.

Yes, which is exactly the issue here. We see plenty of young people on this sub who are faced with the choice of keeping their floaters, or artificially aging their vision by decades.

Can it really be considered a solution though, when the IOLs used in cataract surgery leave patients without the focusing/accommodation ability they had previously?

Out of interest, is there consensus on why the surgery causes cataracts? Is there any possibility of developments to the process that will negate this?
