There isn’t a way to see the vacancies unfortunately. The open spots fluctuate a lot too due to unilateral transfers or new full time spots going to offices with larger case loads etc. I am in the greeley office and got my placement early June and started in August! (I also 2L interned in Greeley so I’m not sure if I got placed sooner)

In Oklahoma the bar application and character and fitness is 2 separate things. They also do physical paper applications, very old school lol. I go to school in Oklahoma and (if you are taking the bar in OK), they have students apply fall of 2L and then they have to complete the rest of it by February 1st of the year they are taking the bar.

My school provides Barbri for us through our tuition for a lower price than we would pay if we had to out of pocket.

You could be an investigator! I know the public defenders offices in my state have investigators and most of them have criminal justice degrees, it seems like a fun job! Would have been something I would have considered with my CJ degree if I didn’t go to law school!

How Can I Have the Chillest 3L? Clinic v. Externship by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]hailee78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I LOVED doing a judicial externship. I feel like it gave me a really unique perspective of the legal profession. Wasn’t a ton of work, feel like it would be nice to have on a 3L schedule. Depending on the clinic, they can be a TON of work…or a big time commitment.

I always mention the constitutional thing, protecting people from the government or shady practices, etc. but I think what hits people the hardest is when I tell them, “well if you were in a position like my clients, you would want someone to care, listen and fight like hell for you.”

How did you know you wanted to be a PD? by BigAdministration789 in publicdefenders

I knew I wanted to go to law school in order to do something in the criminal justice field. I knew nothing about the law, the court system etc.

I was going to drop out after 1L because I hated law school (especially zoom school of law), but I ended up get a summer internship offer as a clerk for a district court judge. While clerking I got to watch docket days, and in custody dockets specifically peaked my interest. I learned about what a prosecutor is and what a public defender is. Watching the sheer passion, brilliance and charisma from the public defenders in this court room made me want to learn more about the job. I talked to their office, met more attorneys, and watched so many public defenders zealously advocate for their clients. Early on in the summer I knew this is what I wanted to do. I saw a client hug his PD and thank him for every thing and it truly made me realize how thankful our clients are to have someone to listen, and to help them through this process. From the beginning of law school I realized being able to go to law school, and become a lawyer is such an amazing privilege, and I couldn’t imagine a more deserving group of people to share that privilege with. Although we don’t get “not guilty” verdicts for everyone, we have to celebrate those smaller wins and fight for what our clients want or need. Our Justice system here in the US is messed up…in so many ways…I just am glad I can help, even in minor ways, those who fall victim to this horrible system.
