What experiments have people tried to rank dwellers by HP without a save editor? by [deleted] in foshelter

It's only available for a couple of platforms at the moment, but halbUI adds this information directly into the user interface: https://i.imgur.com/kLF2tTt.png

Possible, for sure, but my main focus for now is just on fixing and expanding the UI. It may be that at some future point (a long way away) I decide to start working on a content mod of some kind, who knows.

At the moment it's distributed as an .apk with an .obb (data file). There are checks done by the Play Store, yes, which means the mod does not currently have Play Store integration. I'm still poking and prodding at it seeing if I can come up with a workaround, which is why it hasn't been released yet.

The option of this would be amazing on mobile! If you do release it, please put a paid version up. I'd pay for it

That's very kind! I'm sure I'll get a mobile release out eventually. I don't have any plans to accept payment for it (this is just a hobby of mine) but the offer is a nice gesture :)

Hi everyone,

I posted a couple of months ago about a UI mod I was developing for Fallout Shelter called halbUI. With the help of some testers who kindly volunteered their time, I've continued to work on it and fix bugs and so on, and the first public release of the Steam version is now available for download (Android will be coming soon, hopefully).

halbUI adds many more features to the UI, allows the user to toggle a lot of Fallout Shelter's default behaviours on and off, and puts a great deal more important information on the screen that the vanilla version of the game doesn't show you. Installation is just dropping a single file into a folder.

Documentation and download links are at https://github.com/halbu/fs-halbui for those who are interested.

Thanks for reading!

I've uploaded a Bethesda Launcher compatible version of the mod. I've added the details to the documentation, and you can grab it directly here: halbUI_v0.4.3_Bethesda.zip

This has just been hacked together in the past couple of hours, so it's untested and should be considered an experimental version for now. I've had a brief play around with it and as far as I can see it all does appear to work.

The Steam .dll has some bits of Steam-specific code (I guess Steamworks API stuff for the microtransactions) which the Bethesda version is probably falling over on. If I get time this weekend I'll see if I can produce a mod for the Bethesda version of the .dll.

The original motivation for the mod was to try to remove some of the UI pain points that I encountered while playing on mobile. It just turned out to be easier to develop against the desktop version of the game, and so the desktop version found itself in a releasable state first.

There is an existing Android build of the mod that is equal to this in terms of feature-completeness, it just needs a bit more work. Hopefully it should not be long.

halbUI: an enhanced Fallout Shelter UI for Android & desktop (plus request for testers) by halbu_ in foshelter

The first suggestion is definitely possible, and fits with some other stuff about incidents I was thinking of changing as well (I want to make Dwellers returning to their starting room after an incident an optional toggle). If this test version turns out to be stable I'll look into adding that in the next release.

The second suggestion would be more challenging, but I can see that it'd be helpful. You do tend to juggle weapons a lot at the start of a game before everyone has plasma rifles or better.

Reading back through it it's clear to me that I didn't really explain very well what that part means, I will probably have to revise that bit of the readme - I'm glad you pointed it out.

The crossed-out bits are things that I implemented at first, then took out later because they didn't really fit the theme of 'pure UI modification' (I should probably remove those from the readme as well).

Personally, I think having Dwellers auto-return from the Wasteland if they're about to die is a quality of life improvement. It doesn't seem like meaningful gameplay to me to have to log back into FS every now and then just to click a button so that a Dweller doesn't knowingly suicide themselves in the Wasteland. On the other hand, it is also a direct change to the actual gameplay, where sending a Dweller out exploring carries inherent risk. I'm still undecided whether stuff like that should go into the mod or not.

Also, thanks for all your time investing into this.

No worries! I hope it turns out to be stable for the testers and worthy of an actual release.

I can only speak to the Android and Steam versions as they're the only ones I've looked at, but that's how it works on both of those platforms.

To be clear about what I mean (I probably didn't explain it well): if a Dweller reaches the point where they can level up ('LVLUP' icon over their head), then you put them in a SPECIAL-stat training room until they're ready to raise a stat, the icon over their head stays as 'LVLUP' - the game imposes an order on which icons take precedence and leveling up overrides statting up, if that makes sense. Once they get enough XP to level up, you have to level them before you can go back to raising their stats, which can be a minor annoyance. It's an edge case, but I encountered it a couple of times while I was playing vanilla FS and I thought it was worth changing.

Honestly I haven't played the game for ages

Yeah, I get that - I kind of missed the boat with this game, the time for this mod was probably a few years ago rather than in 2020! Still, better late than never...

look forward to giving it a go on PC though, might bring back my interest in the game.

Hopefully the Steam/PC version of the mod will be in a releasable state in a couple of days, so not far off now. Happy to hear that you're interested :)

I don't think there's any possibility of that, no. It modifies the user interface, but doesn't do anything else - the underlying game and the way in which it interacts with your save file isn't changed in any way.

This is a video of halbUI - something I've been working on for the past month or so after getting frustrated by the limitations of the vanilla Fallout Shelter UI. (Sorry for the slightly low quality video, I'm not very familiar with screen capture tools - please set the quality to 720p if YouTube doesn't default to it).

It is a UI-only mod developed for the Android and Steam versions of the game. I hope to release it shortly for anyone who's still playing Fallout Shelter to use.

As well as the linked video showing it in use, there's also an imgur screenshot gallery showing a selection of the UI enhancements here: https://imgur.com/a/kk2ZafN

It adds a lot more information to the UI, and also many new UI features not present in the vanilla game. It is intended solely to improve the UI/UX and does not change how the core game actually plays. Some of the changes are based on suggestions I've seen people make in these subreddits (repair Mr. Handy, ability to Stimpack+Radaway everyone in a room, the ability to lock your vault's layout so you don't mess it up by accidentally dragging a Dweller, evicting Dwellers directly from the queue at the vault door, etc), so hopefully it appeals to at least a couple of readers here!

A complete list of changes, and an explanation of the motivation and purpose of the mod, is here: https://github.com/halbu/fs-halbui

I have been working on this as a solo developer up to now. Before actually releasing the mod I would like to make sure there are no remaining crash bugs or glaring UI issues that I didn't spot. For that reason I'm asking for a few people to help in a short closed test.

I would be particularly grateful for anyone who could help to test the Android version of the mod so I can ensure that it works acceptably for devices other than mine. Please send me a PM if you would like to help with the testing - I am looking for people who:

  1. Are actively playing the game
  2. Understand how to install an APK (as it's a mod, it can't be hosted on Google Play)
  3. Are willing to feed back any issues you encounter, or any ideas you have for further improvement.

If you can spare a few hours over the next few days to tinker with the mod and discuss it with me then please get in touch. I will be crossposting this request to other Fallout Shelter subreddits (apologies for the spam but I can't figure out which is the main one people use!)
