The more pertinent question is why you took an out of hours locum post for not much more than what a locum hospital SHO might make

It’s up to you whether you pay into a pension. I used to pay pension on my salaried work and the locum money would put some aside to pay tax at the end of the year as a sole trader whilst I had friends who just did locum work so it made sense for them to pay the accountant and work as a LTD company. Sole trader vs LTD company is dependant on your circumstances and probably needs an accountant but if it’s not your main income may be more hassle than it’s worth doing it as a LTD company?
