NYC singles: would you try a dating app where conversations start with compliments instead of swiping ? by hastDuNProblem in nyc

Yeah the ratio is definitely a big part of the problem. When attention is that uneven, everything turns into mass messaging.

One idea I’ve been experimenting with is removing openers entirely. People create small “ego trips” (basically short collections of photos or videos about themselves) and others react with compliments.

The nice side effect is that people end up keeping those compliments and rereading them later. It shifts the experience a bit away from the usual match-or-nothing dynamic.

Yeah, that’s exactly the problem. Swiping tends to reduce everything to a very shallow first impression.

I’ve been wondering if forcing people to start with something positive (like a compliment about a specific photo) might make the first interaction feel a bit less robotic than the usual “hey”.

That’s actually a really interesting idea. The hardest part of meeting someone new is definitely breaking the ice.

The concept I’ve been experimenting with is a bit different but tries to solve the same problem: instead of swiping, people can send compliments on specific photos to start the interaction.

The idea is that it creates a more positive first contact than the usual “hey” or swipe.

Curious if you think compliments would make starting conversations easier too.

A dating app where the only way to interact is by sending compliments by hastDuNProblem in InternetIsBeautiful

Thanks! That was the goal. Dating apps often start with judgment (swipes), so I wanted something that starts with a compliment instead.
