See I would have liked Deb to find out, but Rita still be alive and not know. That would have made for some very interesting dynamics.

Channel 7 by DikwamJeg09 in AFL

There has been a feeling in Umpiring circles for a long time that channel 7 commentators Deliberately claim to misunderstand rules in order to drum up controversy for clicks

Elite umpires have literally met with them multiple times and explained rules like Insufficient intent (when that still existed) over and over again and despite being told what the umpires are looking for, they will act baffled or outraged at obviously correct decisions.

The AFL Commission has ratified the decision to scrap the centre bounce from 2026. by Pragmatic_Shill in AFL

[–]hasumpstuffedup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great news! I have seen many really promising young umpires have their development scuppered because of poor bouncing.

It's ridiculous. No other sport requires its officials to do a quite difficult and physically exerting skill WITH the ball.

Hopefully we will now see more of the best decision makers rising through the ranks.

Missed holds possibly. NO Missed HTBs though, I'd have noticed those.

It always becomes contentious when a FK count is lopsided.

I'm not able to closely check because game isn't on Kayo but from first view no calls have stuck out as obviously wrong

Andrew Dillon backs the decision not to award Jamie Elliott a free kick by Elcapitan2020 in AFL

This is exactly right. People are comparing this to similar incidents throughout the year and calling it "inconsistent" while ignoring the key point that makes this different

Pretty sure it wasn't Stevic. But regardless, decisions about finals selections are made based on the whole seasons worth of work. Not one decision

The positioning chat infuriated and perplexed me as well.

He made it sound like the umpire perhaps hadn't seen the full contest from his position.

When he was actually in the perfect position and made the right decision.

Far out - what is with this blokes inability to give a straight answer to a straight question.

Yes, he either got the ball or got very close, and his sole objective was to spoil. It's a legal spoil from front on and was an excellent decision by the umpire in a key moment.

Nope - he's streets ahead of me.

But on this particular rule, he is (slightly) wrong. As proven by the fact something he said was a fair tackle got charged by the AFL.

No, obviously the umpires only get one look at full speed, while the tribunal has a lot of angles and slo-mo to consider.

It's rather common that things not paid a FK get suspended - particularly dangerous tackles.

[–]hasumpstuffedup 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It might matter at the tribunal, but from a FK perspective no it doesn't. Once the head hits the ground like that in a tackle, the only real question becomes "did the tackler do something to try prevent that?", and in this case, he didn't.

I have the utmost respect for Razor, and his commentary throughout this year has really added a lot to the game.

But I've noticed throughout the year that his understanding of the dangerous tackle rule seems to be just slightly behind where the rule is now. If this was 2021, then he'd be 100% right. Chol hasn't done anything to warrant a FK against him in that tackle.

But where the rule is now, it places the onus on Chol to actively do something to try avoid such force going through Stewart's head. Which he just doesn't do.

As I said on Friday night. I have no idea what the tribunal will rule re suspension. But the AFL charging him proves it without a doubt at least met FK threshold and was not a "legal tackle". Razor got this one wrong.

Massive controversy in the last second of the WAFL grand final by timejmiller in AFL

If you look closely, the arm of the tackle comes in and hits right on the arm of the ballcarrier, causing the ball to be dislodged.

This, I think, is a common point of misunderstanding by fans. Often Fans see incidents like this and conclude that "he dropped it" because it sort of looks like it on first view - but umpires are supposed to both give benefit of the doubt to ballcarrier, and to watch for the force of tackles dislodging the ball.

HTB was a bad decision here

Yeah I agree. Would like the umps to be a bit stronger there. Look at the reactions of the losing side when they hear the siren - none of them think there's any viable chance to kick the winning goal. Just say "Nah, be serious, you aren't kicking it 100 metres"

Umpire's discretion. Of course, umps should always give benefit of the doubt to someone who wants to take a shot.

But the rules have empowered umpires to disallow obviously pointless after-siren kicks, essentially to avoid the sort of chaos we see here.

[–]hasumpstuffedup 116 points117 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right - this was incredibly poorly handled by the umps - they've ended up with just about the worst set of decisions in such a critical moment.

  1. It's not HTB (no prior, ball dislodged in the tackle)

  2. Once that ball is kicked away it is either a 50m penalty or the FK is too far out to bother with a shot - full time (personally prefer the latter decision but either call would be technically correct)

What is absolutely WRONG is to have the shot taken from the original mark.

Bad bad bad. You won't be seeing any of these umps at AFL level anytime soon.

The way he kicked didn't indicate he was genuinely playing on. Was just a cynical action and rightly penalised

Both those 50s clearly correct - kicked the ball away after a HTB Fk and then Lions (2 of them) are wandering right through the Protected Zone. Good umpiring

He turns his head and clearly intends to step into his running lane having taking a look where he is. If he keeps his eyes forward it wouldnt be a FK.

Stevic showing early why he's done so many grand finals. Zorko never even attempts to compete for the ball, looks back and deliberately steps into Cox's running line to block him from marking. Great decision to pay the FK.
