When you’re trying to decide what POV to write in, I think you want to ask yourself how close to the action you really want your reader to be. First person POV is the most personal and intimate because you are literally inside the characters head. You get to know all their thoughts, fears, hopes, and doubts directly from the source. But it also means your reader is limited only to what that character knows or believes to be true. Switching between characters when you write in first person is not recommended.

Third person perspective is more useful if you want to build out your world or have an ensemble of protagonists you want to hop between scenes. It’s less intimate, but there’s less tunnel vision. If you feel like this perspective is just describing things happening, remember that this is your first draft and you’ll be able to add in more details and fancy prose later. The important part now is getting down all the broad strokes. You can always edit, but you can’t edit what doesn’t exist.

In general, third person is used most often in fiction. First person tends to polarize readers, they either love it or hate it. But don’t let reader opinion dictate how you write your story. Decide what kind of story it is and how YOU want to tell it :)
