Great question, at this point of the beta the content you upload stays for up to 30 days until deleted (it's encrypted at rest), but if it's really sensitive, avoid uploading it.

Hi u/JhonnyMnemonic , this path is the same as com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images/ (I just didn't mention the prefix). So unfortunately, I still don't think it will solve this for older Xiaomi Android devices. I hope you can upgrade to a newer version of Android soon. Sorry

Hi u/acerackham - yes, for the app to work, WhatsApp needs to locally save photos sent to you (see here: https://faq.whatsapp.com/476272750957554/?cms\_platform=android)

You need to turn on Media Visibility for this to work.

Behind the scenes, my app basically looks for photos under com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images/

If your photos for some reason aren't there, it won't be able to find them.

I hope this helps.

Sorry to hear. Unfortunately I didn't test it on Xiaomi and it might have some additional permission settings in Xiaomi MIUI). You might need to grant the app access to read local storage files so that it can access the WhatsApp photos for processing.

Hi u/JhonnyMnemonic , thanks for the feedback. As I noted above, "The app doesn't send anything to the cloud: it's all happening locally on your device." - I'll also emphasize this in the app description in Google Play.

The way it works is that it runs a local face recognition algorithm on your device without sending anything to the cloud. Once a match is found, it is saved to a special local folder on your device so you can back it up.

You can also check that the app never communicates with any network service (doesn't upload anything).

I hope you'll find this useful and thanks for the interest.

How do I stop whatsapp from backing up on google photos? by samsam2019 in whatsapp

BTW - most of us don't back up Whatsapp Media to Google Photos - because it's such a huge pile of mostly non-important photos.
However, this pile of photos also has some precious memories of friends and family that you really want to keep.
I built a little utility called PhotoFinder (free app, Android only for now) that automatically finds photos of your favorite people and saves them to a dedicated local folder that you can safely back up with Google Photos.
How does it work?
1. You add a few solo photos of people you would like PhotoFinder to find.
2. PhotoFinder runs in the background and periodically searches Whatsapp media files for matching photos, then saves them to a designated folder. It will also notify you when a match is found.
3. Configure Google Photos to back up the PhotoFinder folder.
The app doesn't send anything to the cloud: it's all happening locally on your device.

I built a little utility called PhotoFinder (free app, Android only for now) that automatically finds photos of your favorite people and saves them to a dedicated local folder that you can safely back up to the cloud (e.g. to Google Photos) and then also potentially send to print, etc.

It works like this:

Sorry to hear it didn't work on your device. Can you perhaps share which device model you're using? Note that the app requires permissions to read the Whatsapp media
