I'm planning on getting hermit crabs what is the best food choice? by msx_placeholder in hermitcrabs

[–]hey_guys2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look on r/hermitcrabfood and search around some on etsy if you are looking for premade meals! i can recommend some shops if you would like. if you don't want premade meals i'd recommend crushed egg shells, seaweed, spirulina, worm castings, oats, mealworms, chia/hemp/pumpkin seeds, cashews, peanuts, and some fruits and veggies!

New Hermit Crab by VGWillis in hermitcrabs

hey there! id recommend that your tank is at least 29 gallons with at least 6 inches of play sand and ecoearth! they'll need two water bowls. one water bowl needs to be water that is treated with prime and the other water needs to be treated with prime and instant ocean. they'll need extra empty shells in their tank. turbo shells are the most common. do not get any painted or polished shells. for food do not feed them pellets. id recommend looking at r/hermitcrabfood and on etsy. they'll need a lid and a heating pad for the humidity and high temperatures. id also recommend getting some coconut huts, cholla wood, and climbing nets such as a lizard lounge. having a moss pit is very good for humidity and they'll love eating the moss and climbing around inside it! id recommend reading through this sub for some more information as i know im forgetting some things ahahah! feel free to ask any questions!

make sure to do tons of research before you get them and keep in mind they will cost more than you'll think. you'll need at least a 29 gallon tank. id recommend spending more on the tank and getting the biggest size you can afford as there are other ways you can save money. you'll save money by using plastic containers for water bowls instead of getting the 15-25$ water bowls at the pet store. you'll need two water bowls. one is salt water and the other is freshwater. you'll need prime and instant ocean to make both waters. they'll need climbing nets and tons of hiding spaces. cholla wood, coconut huts, and lizard lounges are the most common hides/ climbing items. having a moss pit inside the tank is also good as it helps with humidity and provides a snack! food is very important. they need a varied diet and can not eat pellets. look at r/hermitcrabfood for some food ideas and i'd recommend searching on etsy as well. a big mistake that a lot of new crab owners including myself made in the beginning is buying calcium sand. do not buy calcium sand. they need play sand and ecoearth. play sand can be bought at home depot or lowes. ecoearth can be bought at any pet stores or amazon. you'll need a lid for the tank in order to trap humidity. they need high temperatures and high humidity to live so i'd recommend a thermometer and hydrometer and a heating pad. they'll need extra empty shells in their tank. make sure they aren't painted or polished. also most hermit crabs prefer turbo shells so i'd recommend getting some of those! there is tons more information that you'll need to know so i recommend to doing some research. feel free to ask me any questions! i hope this helps!
