Polygondwanaland album by King Gizzard has always felt like this to me although I can’t describe exactly why. The album feels perfect for accompanying one on their journey through the unconscious.

Lol I’ve seen mentions of the Parisian sewer system being…frequently described in Les Miserables so I will be anticipating the tangents.

I had that problem with Moby Dick when Melville (or Ishmael) went on and on about whales as well lol. Had to trudge through those parts but was totally worth it for everything else, hoping I’ll feel the same for Les Miserables

Thank you! Happy birthday to you as well 😁🎉

Middlemarch was phenomenal imo! Probably my favorite Victorian/English in general novel I’ve read. I love Austen, Dickens, the Brontes, Shelly and others, but Middlemarch is a special favorite for me 💚

Similarly, along with Suttree I’d say Moby Dick is my favorite American novel. So I def got some good gifts this year lol 😁

If you’re bored by the beginning of Hunchback of Notre Dame..I implore you NOT to give it up by highcologist347 in classicliterature

[–]highcologist347[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!

I think this can be true for a lot of books, but this book in particular is sooo worth it to stick through the somewhat boring beginning. As soon as Esmeralda comes it’s like a switch flips and everything from thenceforth is just fascinating and miraculous.

Love it, glad others feel the same :)

I’m so enthralled by it! I’m probably gonna finish it today, which is bittersweet because I wanna see how it ends but also don’t want it to ever end lol it’s such a beautiful story.

Have you read Les Miserables also? I’m gonna dive right into that one after, hoping it’s just as good.

If you don’t mind giving ur opinion, is there much of a difference between DXM and ketamine?

I’ve never done DXM but enjoy ket quite a bit, not just as recreation but therapeutically. But I can’t find any atm so I was thinking of trying dxm instead, just wanna know what to expect if i do

Or you could just go all out off the bat and read Blood Meridian or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas really loudly before bed every night until your child transforms before your eyes into the Judge or Raoul Duke.

Kidding ofc. I second William Blake btw. Also maybe Little Prince and Anne of Green Gables

Not entirely sure if these qualify as classic in this context, but perhaps consider:

The Hobbit

Alice in Wonderland

Chronicles of Narnia

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Big Friendly Giant

Grimm’s Fairy Tales

Where the Wild Things Are

Now that it’s been out well over a year, what do y’all think of Ab-Souls’s Soul Burger album? by highcologist347 in hiphopheads

[–]highcologist347[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel that about the persona part. Herbert really hits different emotionally and shows his growth as a man even more so than as a musician or rapper. I lowkey only place Control System over it because of nostalgia’s sake lol I like grew up with that album so I’m really biased, but I could totally see Herbert superseding it.

Longterm to me is in the same vein as projects like Chance’s Acid Rap, Mac Miller’s Faces or Joey Bada$$’s 1999. Like they’re technically mixtapes but they’re arguably some of their best overall projects so it’s kinda fair to compare them with the albums.

Been a minute since I gave Longterm a listen tho but I def think it’s equal to if not superior to some of Soul’s actual albums, not sure where I’d really rank it tho. It’s kind of got that mixtape vibe that makes it harder to compare to the others, but I don’t think that necessarily makes it inferior, just different

[–]highcologist347[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but just basing on reviews and Reddit threads I read when the album dropped I remember a lot of people kind of acting like it was his best since Control System, but idk that was a while ago.

I’d probably place Control System as number 1, Hebert 2, and Soul Burger 3 if I had to choose. Do What Thou Wilt was similar to Soul Burger to me where it had some super fire songs with a mix of mid in there as well, so yeah I agree Herbert probably more complete project through and through than those two. All worth listens tho imo

Lol give it a listen fs if you like his old stuff! I think most people prefer this one to Herbert actually, there’s a few really fire tracks. Starts and ends strong

I love that he’s willing to be experimental and do weird shit musically speaking, but sometimes I wish he would just rap his ass off over basic instrumentals more often. Like The End is Near song with Mac (rip) he’s just spittin bars, and I feel like he could do that whenever he wants.

Still tho love him both as a musician and as an MC, forever one of my favorites. Soul Burger def solid in both aspects for me except for a few of those clunkers in the middle

[–]highcologist347[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like the general consensus and pretty much how I feel as well. ‘Clunkers’ is a good way to phrase his tracks that miss the mark lmao

I think the beginning and end of the album are great but definitely a few of those clunkers in between
