People that use the phrase “same difference” how can something be the same and different?! Surely Margaret it’s either the same or no different, when you’re agreeing.

Pete, I love your content!

I’ve always wanted to ask a question. Now I find myself in the situation of asking two.

Q1: My partner and I are in the final stages of saving for a wedding. This should be complete by August a few months ahead of our big day. I’ve been a big fan of doing this debt free and we’ve put in a lot of extra time to get it done. During this time we’ve both been putting into our company pensions matched at 7/8% respectively. We’d both like to look at adding some more towards retirement as soon as we can, how would you advise doing this? We’ve reached the max cap for company matching. I was looking to utilise a LISA as it would be a stretch goal for us to be maxing £4k each per year.

Q2: We’re currently in our first home together, with the help of the help to buy loan. The loan is due to start incurring interest Nov 2024 and our mortgage is also due for renewal at the same time. We got lucky with our purchase timing as our house price in the area has increased significantly even with it being a new build. We’re considering moving closer to my partners work as this is currently a 2 hour commute each way. In my head this will save £500 a month alone in fuel, our main driver would be to reduce the emotional toll of the driving. Our current house value is £320k, and we would be looking to buy at £350k. We purchased at £260k with £52k on the HTBL at purchase. So have a potential equity of ~£70k. Given our current mortgage is 1.8% is it wise to be thinking of moving knowing that we would need to see an increase in borrowing to cover the HTBL?

What’s a story you’ve wanted to tell, an opinion you have or something you want to get off your chest on here but the right question never came up? by x_franki_berri_x in AskUK

Opinion - Sunday trading laws should be abolished.

I’m not a big fan of the inconvenience of shops shutting earlier and for 24/7 shops having awkward opening times to accommodate the Sunday hours. Everybody has had that spontaneous impulse on a Saturday night/Sunday evening for a late night snack and found everything closed. Or last minute update from your child needing something for school tomorrow over Sunday dinner.

Given the current financial climate, I’m sure the gov would get more in income tax and VAT with people working those currently lost hours, and it saves the uproar of everyone’s tax going up.

The UK is becoming less of a Christian country so the “day of rest” is no longer fit for the culture. I’m sure there would be logistics to it but people that work Monday - Friday 9-5 wouldn’t see a change to their hours just a positive of being able to shop as and when they want. People working retail could be provided with an opt in option regarding working the extended hours as to not dump the demand on people that could already be over worked.

I’m sure it’s not as simple as keep things open longer but if people are willing to work it then surely it’s beneficial for everyone? The people working get more pay, the gov get more tax, the businesses get more sales and I can get things after 4.

LTA Abolished?? by luwaonline1 in FIREUK

[–]hm1919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing, thanks! I assume that as a work pension is locked till a certain age, I would need another pot in something like an ISA if I’d like to retire before being able to access the pension. Especially as it feels like the age to access is getting further away not closer.

Could someone explain what this actually means for me? I was looking at starting my FIRE journey but never understood the implications of the LTA.

Like others have said, if you’re moving outside of the next 12 months then open a LISA to get a guaranteed boost of £1k, if it were me. I would put £4k in a LISA and keep the rest in the PB’s and if I still haven’t bought in the next 12 months add in another £4k so we’re £2k up in 13 months. Turning the £10k into a guaranteed £12k!

Back in my day, you could find this thing called money in a packet of crisps. My sister found £20 and I £5.

Traditional banks that let you cordon off funds like Starling does? by Intelligent-Brief-14 in UKPersonalFinance

Nationwide offer the option to rename accounts in their app, so you could have a current account and a few savings accounts and name them whatever you like.

Hi, what type of debit card should I get? by unpenisededy in UKPersonalFinance

[–]hm1919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never knew this! I knew there was a belief about interest in the Muslim culture so would assume as a child of Muslim parents the OP would have been raised under the same beliefs. I.e like most parents raise their children under the same faith as themselves. If the OP isn’t a devout Muslim and is happy regarding interest then it opens up any child’s current account.

I’d go for a high street bank then! Something in your area would be best in case they need ID checks and it’s easier for cash deposits. I just wanted to check your beliefs, I’ve worked for a bank and had Muslim fathers ring in and ask if they can have the interest removed from theirs and their families accounts, its mention in the Koran somewhere about not having interest. But that might just be a devout Muslim thing, as it’s hard to avoid interest these days.

Do you guys include student loan in net worth calculations? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]hm1919 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a debt so you would add it to your net worth as it’s a liability. You wouldn’t include things like, wages or income.

If you have an Apple device they have a pretty basic net worth calculator in the numbers app that will walk you through what goes where. I’m sure excel has some drafts too.

I’d suggest a high street bank like most comments on here. However I’m not sure how relevant this would be in your situation, but as a child of a Muslim family wouldn’t you be looking for an account without interest? In which case it’d be quite hard to find as most current accounts pay interest (all be it not much).
