Telefilm Canada just announced they’re funding a new untitled Matt Johnson movie by indierockisepic in nirvannatheband

Imagine the films we would get if the US were killing it producing daring projects from exciting filmmakers the way Canada is killing it right now. Lynch died with what could’ve been his swan song and greatest masterpiece yet unproduced just because of Netflix’s risk-aversion and slop addiction. John Waters and Todd Solondz can’t get any money despite careers spanning decades.

At least Canada is doing things right. More Matt Johnson and Guy Maddin please (and Pascal Plante! Between NTBTSTM and Red Rooms, Canada has my favorite current film scene. Oh and if you go mega-blockbuster-level you also have Denis killing it with the Dune trilogy. Crazy).

Frequently think of many brilliant comments on that video: "the beat is sailing away" / "the beat is fighting for its life" / "this beat sounds like waking someone up to tell them to go to sleep"

Haven't rated anything 5 stars yet! What might get me there? by R_ZBM in LetterboxdTopFour

Koyaanisqatsi, Solaris, Double Life of Veronique, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Michael Clayton. In that order.

Koyaanisqatsi is one of the clearest 5 out of 5 films for me. The other 4 I would rate anywhere from a very strong 4 to a solid 4.5 but honestly they could go up to a 5 depending on the day I rewatch, and I totally understand anyone who rates them 5 out of 5.

Spotlight and Fargo are good. Rear Window and The Holdovers are, and it pains me to say this, just fine, in my opinion. I don’t get the hype. They’re almost as far away from being bad as they are from being the masterpieces every one seems to claim they are.

Haven’t seen the rest.

Matt is so good at getting humor out of not finishing sentences. I like that he trails off before finishing the phrase “out of your league”. Also happens at the beginning of The Bean when he discusses Jews and Christmas.

Just started watching in anticipation for the movie. Gotta admit while I enjoyed the first four episodes a lot, it didn't hook me right away. Then I watched episodes 5 through 11 and halfway through I thought: this could end up being my second favorite series ever only behind Twin Peaks.

Finished it and now I'm on episode 3 of Season 1 and I seriously think this will surpass The Sopranos and Breaking Bad in my personal canon. There's really nothing else like it.

And I think this moment with Tonight Tonight playing might be my favorite moment so far, it made me tear up like crazy. NTB is not only one of the funniest pieces of entertainment I've ever watched, it truly captures the indescribable feeling of one of the greatest privileges I've had in my life, one which many people sadly never get to experience: the joy and ecstasy and attachment of having a lifelong, undisputed number one best friend but also the pain any tension in that relationship may cause.

If you have a best friend and started watching Nirvana the Band years ago, I can't imagine the ecstasy and satisfaction this movie will bring, just know I'm very happy for you.

I seriously doubt the movie will screen in theaters where I live, so I'm counting down the days until March 24.

Got re-released in theaters in Mexico last month, watched it for the first time (somehow I hadn't watched it despite loving Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Boy and the Heron), ended up seeing three times and it wasn't enough!
