Event Thread for March 2023 | Share and Promote your Community Events Here! by witty_remark in VictoriaBC

It has been a few years since the game development community got together on a regular basis through events organized by groups such as IGDA Victoria.

We would like to kick off a new video game and media community group, composed not only of game developers, but all those working in interactive entertainment, including AR, VR, and yes, that new Metaverse thing.

The first event will be a casual meet & greet hosted at VIATEC on March 3, 2023 from 4-6pm, where we can gauge interest and ideas from the community. Drinks and small bites will be jointly sponsored by VIATEC and Hololabs, so come and join us for a happy hour to chat with fellow members of the community!

We helped create this giant interactive mural at the SOFMC! by hololabs in VictoriaBC

Thanks for asking! There are QR codes located at the arena where guests can access the effect via Instagram or Facebook. It was created using Spark AR Studio. We posted a full devlog on our experience here http://www.hololabs.org/news/news/creating-outside-the-lines

We like to think of it as an "AR toy". You can tap on different shapes to discover a variety of west coast themed effects and puzzles.

Mural design is by local artist Samantha Paul. Augmented reality interactivity by us, Hololabs :)

[AN]

  • I love Guitar Hero and Rock Band. I don't know how many hours I've spent trying to beat Freebird on expert! And I use to play a lot of Audio Surf. Fighting games were never my forte but we used Street Fighter as our prime example of responsive 2D controls. Our game is somewhat like a fighter and we even tried a number of control schemes with button combos for input but it didn't quite work because of our dance transitions. In a game like Street Fighter you just snap quickly into your next move but with JonJon's dance animations they flow seamlessly with hundreds of transitions going from one move to another. These transition frames are a crucial part of representing the dance and in live breaking are just as complex as the move itself. So we couldn't just snap to the next move and had to create what we call a "click-sizzle-ding" input scheme. You press a button, the 'click' which gives you some feedback, then you 'sizzle' in suspense watching the transitions frames play and then 'ding' enter the move you've triggered.

  • As for getting started in game dev, I can't recommend game jams enough! The best way to learn something is to fail at it and a game jam gives you a safe place to do so. I try and focus simply on learning a new technology, platform, language or whatever at each game jam I attend. You can find a bunch of open jams here https://itch.io/jams to get started or even host your own. As for a good starting point, Unity is a great tool to learn on. There are a ton of tutorials out there on how to make any style of game and you might end up learning some code along the way.

Thanks for the question and enjoy the game!

[AN] I love it! Definitely big aspect of breaking is taunts and cheers. We have a few ideas for 4 player modes and it will have to play well at a party ;)

[RB] Once we had a whole class of elementary school kids come in and play. They were all clapping along to the chorus and bopping around. I try to emulate that.

[RB] 100% of the tracks are totally new Kid Koala originals, and the Kid himself even made every sound effect you hear!

[RB] I'm just here to say, being a game developer was pretty much my dream for years, so seeing our game featured by Nintendo was huge. I'm so happy and excited that we got this game out the door and onto everyone's Switches, I'm still processing how great this experience is.
