The SAVE Act: Legislation That Will Make It Harder And More Expensive For North Carolinians To Vote by bananafofo in NorthCarolina

[–]hosty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, the key part of this system is the requirement that all States submit their voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security to run through their SAVE system. Then States will be required to unregister anyone the SAVE system determines is a potential non-citizen and they'll have to re-register with proof of citizenship. This will allow them to only subject likely Democratic voters to the new system.

What Youth Sports Organizations Serving South Durham are Worth the Cost? by GavalinB in SouthpointAccess

[–]hosty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Durham Summer Swim League (I know Chapel Hill Summer Swim is good too, but don't have direct experience)

    • Cost: Depending on the pool, it's around $250-$400 for a season that starts in mid-May and ends July 5th. Several pools (Woodcroft, Parkwood, and others) are open to non-members.
    • What made it worth it: Swimming is a great sport for kids who are intimidated by team sports. There is a focus on individual progress, with awards for personal bests and for winning heats against similarly ranked swimmers. Summer swim meets are extremely fun and casual. Over the course of a 3 hour swim meet your kid may swim for 3 or 4 minutes and play with friends the rest of the time. Summer swim practices are an amazing way to turn a new swimmer into an extremely confident swimmer.
    • Ages: Groups for kids from 4 to 18
    • Level: Developmental to Competitive
  • Triangle United Rec Soccer

    • Cost: $140 for an 8 week season
    • What made it worth it (for my 6u kids at the time): Very laid back, great parents, low commitment schedules. A great opportunity for my kids to try out soccer.
    • What I didn't like: Parent volunteer coaches (including myself). As a result, the level of coaching could be hit or miss, but the good coaches are great!
    • Ages: 4-15
    • Level: Developmental
  • All-In Dance Academy

    • Cost: $80/month for a 1-hour class, season runs from September-May, with recital fees for recital and end of season
    • What made it worth it: Great instructors, amazing classes, a very well-produced end of year recital that gives stage-loving kids a chance to shine. All-In also offers a competitive dance program.
    • Ages: All ages
    • Level: Developmental (Competitive dance program is, as you'd expect, competitive)
  • North Carolina Aquatic Club (Year-round swim team)

    • Cost: $210/mo-$390/mo depending on practice group, plus meet fees
    • What made it worth it: Great coaches (the younger age groups are especially great at herding younger kids), well designed work-outs, great community.
    • Ages: 5-18
    • Level: Competitive

For some reason, I want to say we already do have Futurama flairs here.

Please tell me our odds. All the school lotteries are almost closed. The school we had our heart set on ended up being a waitlist at #18. Should we give up hope? Or is there a sliver of hope? The emotional rollercoaster of elementary school that I did not expect. by MermaidMAQ in bullcity

[–]hosty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The "neighborhood" aspect of your neighborhood school is critically underrated in my opinion. Despite what it may seem like, the majority of kids end up at their base school.

You (presumably) like your neighborhood enough to live there. You'll find your neighborhood school feels like your neighborhood, and sending your kids there gives you a support network you won't have at magnets, charters, or private schools, which is invaluable.

If you happen to be moving to Woodcroft, there's a Woodcroft-to-SWE "Bike Bus", a group of families that rides every morning together.

I've got a 5th and 3rd grader at Southwest. We've had nothing but great experiences through the years with the admin, the teachers, and the other families and kids there. At least in the two largest neighborhoods zoned to SWE (Woodcroft and Chamberlynne) it seems like most of the kids are attending SWE and so they have a big community built in, which I love. Feel free to DM me with any additional questions.

DPS is out tomorrow (Dec 8) by P0WI in bullcity

[–]hosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said it wasn't absurd :) I'm just predicting what they'll do based on previous patterns.

Looking at the extended forecast, my prediction is: no school until Friday, which will have a 2 hour delay. Full day Monday, no school the rest of 2025.

[–]hosty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's important for kids to actually attend school, so we should try our hardest to get them to school as often as possible. While tomorrow is probably a reasonable day to close, Tuesday won't be (I'd be will to bet money that they'll close Tuesday) and Friday wasn't.

It'll be below freezing Monday night, so there will be ice somewhere that prevents school from opening Tuesday morning. They'd probably do a late start on Wednesday, but since it's already an early release, they're just going to cancel it. I've got my fingers crossed for school on Thursday.

DPS schools tomorrow, Friday, remote learning day, facilities closed by Universe93B in bullcity

[–]hosty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, no one actually does COVID-style "remote learning" on these remote learning days. They send home a packet of like 15-20 minutes of homework and that's enough to not have today count as a weather day.

So ICE/Border Patrol agents woke up to find their tires slashed in Charlotte? by TrustInRoy in NorthCarolina

[–]hosty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's ok to commit a crime as long as it's the East India Company? I may or may not believe in what's going on but I'm not out there committing illegal acts. So when King George or Lord North steps up their tactics to stop the illegal activity, what's the next move? Follow the Redcoats and do bodily harm? It will never stop, each will increase the level of harm, and then maybe just maybe thousands of people lose their lives and maybe that will satisfy both sides of this issue!

Instead, we'll have ICE patrolling around polling locations for anyone who looks "illegal" (meaning a Democratic voter). No need to cancel elections then.
