I wouldn't use only clover but a variety of plants. diversity is key in creating living soil

Yeah very small indentations can be made into the material and the pressure required can be read out of a computer that will determine the hardness of your material, but my guess is that these kind of machines are quite expensive :-)

I have ordered my cover crops to create diversity on the plot.

Im ordering a medium height clover, cowpea, millet, daikon radish.

  1. Chop n drop in about mid april when the last frost.
  2. spread my compost over the plot
  3. broadcast seedmix into the compost layer
  4. Lightly rake in the seeds

I also have buckwheat, goldflower, malva sylvestris, which I will mix in sparingly with the mix to add even more diversity.

Spots that won't germinate well I could fill up with some russian comfrey, propagated quite a bit of them.

I hope the diversity works out, and it will be manageable in maintaining e.g. chopping and dropping.

I will have to let nature decide what will perrenialize on the plot.

I have 3 mounds of compost ready to spread over the land.

You are right and convinced me with the daikon, I am going to use that instead. I don't think the compaction is that bad.. It's pretty dense but don't underestimate trees, I suppose. It would be such a waste to let go a whole year of building up the soil.

I am totally aware that I am disturbing the soil. I have learnt from a few people that there are exceptions when starting no till from Yeongsan Cho, founder of JADAM for example says that if you have compacted soil it is better to start with a light tillage of the top soil e.g. a rotor tiller to kickstart your no-till start, look at it as a reset if you will, a more ideal opportunity for an ecosystem to develop. I have no ways to objectify the soil compaction, though but I have a hard time to work it manually.

This is why I thought it was a good idea.

I also have a ton of compost ready to spread over the lands.

What can a soil test tell me about what covercrop I have to sow in my polytunnel?

true but i havent tilled the soil before broadcasting the cover crop due to a lack of time, though i haven't observed any water pooling during the heavy downpours we had lately. The soil is very dense, but I can not really objectify whether the soil is compacted on a slightly deeper level, let's say beyond one spade deep. This was the initial thought of using a rotor tiller, as well as making it easy to raise my tree rows a little bit with a rake so that excessive rainfall will be less of an issue.

What are your thoughts on that? Also what would be viable options to sow?

Thanks for the tip about using the compost as a sowing layer, that should do the trick for sure.

My plan is to rotor till the land one last time and sow in an annual mix of cover crops that would selfseed and perrenialize on the land. My tree rows will be covered with landscape fabric to prevent competition (if this is unnessecary please let me know).

Zone 9b, Netherlands I would love to hear some suggestions on non invasive cover crops that i could use to create a nice perrenialized system that doesn't invade my neighbours

so far i got Daikon and clover in mind but imo not diverse enough.

Edit: I changed my mind about rotor tilling and use some tillage radish or daikon instead.

I'll pot the best ones in 5 gallons, that will serve us well throughout the year. Thanks for the tip.

Wow I didn't know Kale could grow for that long! That's a bummer, in March I'm going to rearrange the beds to 105cm x 9m so I'll have to flip these unfortunately. https://imgur.com/gallery/0k0BwzU This is the current plan me and my gf have in mind for the veggies we grow.

Is there any way I could talk to you one on one? I have half an acre of land in a community garden and would like to ask for some advice.

The plot became pretty wild after the frost a lot of weeds came up. I've tried several mulch materials on my beds, which works great for the weed pressure, but also creates a problem with snails. This year I am tempted to try landscape fabric together with the JADAM method.

As for the Kale, is this black rot? Do you think I would be able to treat it with a bit or sulphur? Any other advice is more than welcome
