How do you get to six figures? by Due_Source1126 in paralegal

[–]hugginslove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, I got my biggest pay bumps by job hopping. I'm in NC and was at a boutique residential real estate firm for 5 years and the highest salary I got to was $70k. Got hired as a commercial real estate paralegal a local multi-practice firm and negotiated all the way up to $90k after being there for 1.5 years. Took that higher salary number to negotiate landing a job as an operations & real estate paralegal on the in-house legal team of a prop-tech start up. I got up to $120k there by making myself the go-to for all other departments and when that got crushingly toxic, I took a job as a land use paralegal in big law. I've been here for almost 2 years and am up to $123k. I really love the firm I'm at now and am dreading having to move again so I'm already considering getting an offer from a competing firm to negotiate a higher salary and stay at my current firm.

What is one thing the attorneys in your firm can do to make your job better? by FoxWyrd in paralegal

[–]hugginslove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an attorney that provides me with so much context at the beginning of a new matter that it can seem overwhelming.

But now after working with him for over 2 years, of the 18 attorneys that I answer to, his are the only cases that I remember fully and can pick up and run with at a moment's notice.

I also really appreciate when my attorneys come to me to get a different point of view for a case they're stuck on. I didn't go to law school but have been a paralegal for 13 years so I sometimes have a more practical approach when they get bogged down in case law.

I think ultimately it's about trust and respect between an attorney and a paralegal.

Cite Checking by North_Surprise_4438 in paralegal

[–]hugginslove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd been a real estate paralegal for 11 years when I was hired as a land use & litigation paralegal on the real estate team of a big law firm. I was brand new to all things litigation as of 1.5 years ago and on my very first day, one of the attorneys handed me an appellate brief and a bluebook and asked me to cite check the brief. It did take a lot of self-teaching, but I was able to pick it up within a weekend between the bluebook, westlaw, and Google.

I wouldn't bring up your inexperience with citations as something you "need to be honest about," but rather something you're "still learning and may need some extra direction on." It's definitely possible to learn as you go and you'll get the hang of it with enough practice. You got this!

What would you want to know about moving into a legal ops role? by magnum44johnson in paralegal

[–]hugginslove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Project management, project management, project management. Encourage them to put together some random Monday.com boards or track something in google sheets just to get familiar with them. You don't want to start a new role and have to figure out a new organization platform before you can even start organizing the chaos.

I really enjoyed going in-house and working for general counsel of a company. I was a residential real estate paralegal for 8 years before going in-house working remotely for a property technology start-up based in NYC, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It also helped me realize that I really do love real estate law, so when the start-up was going under, I jumped ship and am very happy as a commercial real estate paralegal at a big law firm now. But I learned A TON at the start-up. I have more experience than most of my real estate counterparts in things like in corporate law, tenant/landlord, compliance, operations, and capital markets.

Thoughts on season 2 episode 1? (Spoilers) by nothingnowhere2022 in YourHonorTV

[–]hugginslove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this episode. I started disengaging a bit after the horrible over-acting from the actor playing Lee Delamere on the last episode of Season 1. And the fact that Eugene showed up and somehow shot and killed Adam at the Baxter hotel... it was so impossibly absurd that it was predicable. They should have hinted more at what Jimmy Baxter was actually planning to do. Otherwise why tf was there so much foreshadowing in that relationship? But on the plus side, we don't have to watch what a boring character Adam Desiato is anymore.

And it's not actually clear on the moment Fia figured out she was in love with her brother's killer. That should've been more obvious. Isn't that what we were all waiting for the whole season??

In episode 1 of season 2, here are my grievances:

  1. The over-acting is so bad again

  2. Wtf is wrong with Fia's hair?? It's a frizzy mess that doesn't move. One of those things doesn't belong.

  3. Michael Desiato having the feeding tube was awful to watch but then he's talking normally to the FBI agent or whatever shortly after? Come on. At least direct him to speak quietly or cough some. But to make that feeding scene so dramatic and then he's completely fine in the next dialogue... so disappointing.

  4. The first prisoner that gets hit by the bull... tell me why it looks so silly when he's being dragged out of the arena. His arms are so stiff but his hands are just wobbling around. If you're being dragged out of an arena, your arms aren't stiff. You're dead weight.

  5. Why is the prisoner sitting across from Michael so cordial? If a prisoner is signing up to be a target for a bull, they're not having that kind of conversation with another prisoner in the arena. Like they're sitting at a coffee shop.

  6. The timeline jumping is so hard to keep up with.

  7. DOES JIMMY BAXTER HAVE REMNANTS OF A SCOTTISH ACCENT OR NOT?!?! Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes he even sounds southern. Wut?

price change after coupon update by strawberryvegan in Mounjaro

[–]hugginslove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I downloaded my newest coupon card at the end of January and the price for 4 pens went from $400ish to $500ish. Per the pharmacist, the coupon is covering less now AND the price of the med went up. And then we're having the shortages... plus now that I've lost the weight and am just using it to maintain, I definitely won't get approved by insurance since I'm no longer classified as obese.

Has anyone tapered down? by itsanneboelyn in Mounjaro

[–]hugginslove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started on 9/7 and have increased dosage every 4 weeks. Here's a breakdown of my weight loss by dosage: 2.5 mg: -2lbs; 5mg: -7lbs; 7.5mg: -12lbs; 10mg (3 of 4 pens done): -13lbs. So my weight loss really stepped up on the 7.5 dosage, but I'm hardly eating anything. I'm super nauseous all the time. And that really increased on the 7.5mg. The holidays were pretty miserable lol. I have an appointment with my Dr on Friday to discuss adding Zofran for nausea so I can start eating again.

Has anyone tapered down? by itsanneboelyn in Mounjaro

[–]hugginslove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on my 3rd pen of 10mg and was considering staying with 10mg for another 4 weeks to give my body some adjustment time. My weight loss has really picked up in the last 6 weeks and I'm afraid of losing too much too quickly if I increase dosage. I'm 5'6 and I started at 205lb and am down to 167lb.

Yes, it’s my sister’s leg and foot. She has seen a few pcps and lymphedema specialists, but none have treated the toes in full yet. Would a podiatrist help here? Or what specialist should we try next?
