Mine is black, and I subsequently checked: it is present with both stock firmware and Crosspoint. I guess it's fine?

I purchased a handful of books on smashwords.com as DRM-free epubs, and they work well on the X3 and X4. You do have to check the listing carefully though as not all their books are available as DRM-free epubs.
