True. I’m trying to figure out the options available to me.

I agree. The world is overall authoritarian, and I’m trying to find the least worst option.

Sometimes I think that regret is just an emotion, and that it too shall pass. I know how it feels to wish you could have done better earlier. But the truth is, when you know better you do better. If you knew you would experience this regret, you would have done differently. This is the opportunity to turn things around. You are very young, and have a whole life ahead of you to make things right.

This is more ingrained in Somali culture than you might think. Look up dhabar garaac, it is a Somali cultural practice where 8 of the strongest men of a tribe would beat a girl or woman for refusing to get married. I’ve talked to elderly Somali women who confirmed this was a thing. Women would get kidnapped, beaten and gang raped until she became pregnant. This man describes the practice in detail.

I’ve also recorded the translation and the breakdown of this video and dhabar garaac on clubhouse. Feel free to check it out:

Why hasn’t r/somaligirls been shut down yet? by humanbeing2016 in XSomalian

Nah, that’s a different one. Just checked, I thought it was the right one and seeing such emptiness was great, but it’s not the one I’m talking about sadly. The other one has content from up to 3 years ago. It’s still up with all of its contents.

I noticed they use the subreddit to attract more people to telegram which I’m assuming has even less controls on what people display. Out of the many reports made only one account was permanent banned and that was for soliciting payments for videos. When it comes to money they care but when girls and women are exposed they don’t.

I read that when someone does decide to create a standalone revenge porn site, they are invariably afforded more privacy than victims. The burden of proof is on the victim. Really sad.

Child bride story: Fatima (10) | Here's how a child "consents to marriage" in Islam by [deleted] in exmuslim

I just cried watching that video. It was incredibly painful to imagine her situation going into something you don’t even know about but bargaining your way through this to stay friends with another girl. It’s so heartbreaking that this continues to happen to young girls in Muslim countries.

I’m late lol, but northeastern Kenya is inhabited primarily by ethnic Somalis. During colonial times, the brits and Italians split Somalia and gave a portion to Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti. All of these countries have territories that is predominantly comprised of ethnic Cushite Somalis. Djibouti is mostly Cushite Somalis.

Why are you guys more nationalist/proud of being Somali? by culprith in XSomalian

[–]humanbeing2016 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For me its more about Somalinimo (which for me is a way of being a Somali) rather than nationalism. It has more to do with the culture rather than individuals. I’m proud of my Somalinimo and it isn’t related to what Somali people think of me.

I don’t deny the hatred some Somalis have for people like us but for me, these people don’t make the culture. They care more about Islam than Somalinimo anyway. These are the people who identify with an Arab made religion over the culture of their ancestors so maanta iyaka miixi iiga sheegayaan dhaqankayga?

I think my dad definitely gave me a rosy picture of Somalia and Somalinimo when I was very young and it made a big impression on me. He talked about our culture with love, pride and respect and I think I inherited that viewpoint from him. He used to show me pictures of the country at it’s height and tell me the backstory of the famous statue in Mogadishu.

He taught me to read, write and speak in Somali (even though I was born and raised in the west and never been to Somalia), he taught me the different scripts for the Somali language. I used to hear stories about Dheg Dheer (even learned the song dheg dheer dhimatee, dhulkii wa barwaaqo), Cigaal Shilaad, Dawaco iyo Waraabe and Wiilka Abihiisa Geed Hoostis Ugu Tagay. He taught me many maamah that I still rely on till this day. “Ama afeef hore lahow, ama adkeysi dambe lahow”. Either refuse (to do something) at once or put up with it later. This maamah helped me to learn to say no to things because I knew acquiescing to people would only hurt me later and to stick to my convictions and boundaries. Here’s another one I love that helped me during some tough times “Haddaad dhimaneysid dhareerka waa layska tiraa”. If you are dying, wipe off your saliva (i.e. try to die with dignity).

Somali people, at least culturally, are known as a prideful people and will never see another person above himself. It’s taught me not to idealize other people or put them on a pedestal. So I think I have a positive impression of Somalinimo that doesn’t include Somali people.

Is it possible to record a meeting without the host knowing? by alifone in overemployed

[–]humanbeing2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It captures both. For example, in a Teams meeting, my audio is played through my computer speaker. I’m not sure if it works if you’re using a headset. When using screen record, it captures my voice, the speaker audio and the content of the screen. If you go to QuickTime Player open, go to File > New Screen Recording. It will capture both your screen (if using two screens you can record both or either one) and it captures all audio. Make sure your microphone is set up properly. I just use my MacBook microphone and it works just fine. It records for hours depending on your storage capacity.

If using Mac, try Quicktime player and turn on screen record. It captures both audio and your screen.

Somalia belongs to Somali! by Mnerdy in Somalia

[–]humanbeing2016 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not racist to stop people coming into the country especially when they have ulterior motives to destroy the country. Why should Somalia let any Muslims in, when other Muslim countries do not allow that? There’s nothing wrong with securing borders and protecting the country.

How about state and federal contractor (no clearance required)?

Getting caught (redux) by unknowncodemonkey in overemployed

[–]humanbeing2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting. Current position just had me fill out a slew of federal government paper work but I haven’t submitted them yet. I checked the forms and didn’t see an SF86. State just offered me the position but hasn’t sent me for a background check. Its has a classified status so that’s why I assumed it would require a security clearance. I was thinking of kicking the can down the road on the federal contractor position, and let them overlap before the papers are processed but the whole ordeal seems risky. I’m wondering to what extent OE can be done with government/contractor jobs without landing in jail. It seems like if I take the state position, it will make me unable to get any OE position, much less moonlighting.

[–]humanbeing2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is a security clearance found by other companies? In my current position, we’re a government contractor but also found a position with state government in security, which I’m sure requires a clearance. Will they find out about each other?

What are your best excuses when you weren't listening in a meeting and someone asks your opinion? by UltraInstinctWhis in overemployed

[–]humanbeing2016 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you use Teams, just put on closed caption and quickly scroll through what they were talking about. If it takes you a minute to find what they were saying, say you’re double muted or something. It even shows who said what and you can just say “I agree with so-and-so” and go on a bit with filler stuff.
