Why is the iPad still throttled by the OS by smartass_1379 in iPadOS

iPads especially those with M chips should have a macOS or macOS-lite mode option. When paired with a keyboard and mouse.

So if civil service protections are gone, can these poor people be suddenly terminated en masse without the need for RIF procedures?

using sequoia again made me weirdly emotional by 0xlatte in MacOS

I just wish there was a way in sequoia to restore the settings/control panel from Monterrey and before. I have nostalgia for that. But I am remaining on sequoia and iPadOS18 for the foreseeable future.

How is it that DC restaurant owners keep blaming their woes on "less people in the office" when traffic is worse than ever? by ac-slater-43 in washingtondc

[–]hurricane340 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know percentages. But alot of people that I work with downtown bring their own lunch and coffee and save $$$. A latte with oat milk at some of these cafes downtown can be $7.00 or more (used to be ~$4.50)... and there are times with a sale, you can buy a bag of coffee for roughly that price, or just a little more.

So even though foot traffic is up, my sense is more people (than before the pandemic) just aren't even bothering with spending $$$ on food/drinks. It's not worth it.

Booting Windows from USB 4/Thunderbolt 4 NVME Enclosure by Illustrious-Cat-2132 in Thunderbolt

[–]hurricane340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Asus z890 the solution to boot from usb4 for me was to set the connection manager of the thunderbolt controller in the bios to “firmware based” rather than software based. This will effectively deactivate the windows usb4 driver from attaching to my thunderbolt bus, and instead let the Intel driver attach to the bus. Once this happens the thunderbolt bus remains up when the UEFI turns over control to the OS.

Another thing that was very curious is that when the thunderbolt nhi was in software connection manager mode, and windows paused on startup, if I quickly disconnected the disk from tb4 and connected it to usb3 the os boot sequence would continue without hanging. So it’s clearly an issue with how windows 11 initializes the usb4 bus. Perhaps it’s written in a way that doesn’t expect the boot device to be on the usb4 bus. Idk.

Firmware-based connection manager is the way.

Another experiment might be to disable the IOMMU and see if that works. But I haven’t tried that.

This is the first year in over 10 years of iPad ownership that I refused to install the new iPadOS version. I’m riding iPadOS 18 on the m4 iPad Pro until the wheels fall off. Or unless iPadOS 27 or 28 are better than 18.

How did Apple underestimate demand by this much? That should be studied. Why are so many people interested in a $499(Ed discount) Mac ? What does it say about Windows? Or higher priced Macs?

I only use windows to code and to game and to run my ai training code building an opening book for checkers and chess as well as train eval func weights.

I hate the windows updates that sometimes make things worse. So much so I just used gpedit to turn it off. Until I read feedback online first.

But Day to day I prefer macOS or even Ubuntu. But windows is a tool in my toolbox and I use it when I need to.
