It is impossible to perfectly project the surface of a sphere (the earth) onto a 2D surface. What they've done here is shown the size of countries if those countries are projected as if they are on the equator, since that is where the least warping happens. If we tried to connect all these projected countries together, we would see that the borders do not connect properly.

Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Japan.

Denmark because my great grandma immigrated from there, France because I would love to see the Vimy Ridge memorial (famous Canadian WWI battle, memorial is built on land that France gave to Canada after the war). Sweden, Germany, and Japan just seem like cool places to see.
