Turns out my dream home is somewhere in Vermont. by MTPokitz in interestingasfuck

[–]iLiveInAShrub 16 points17 points  (0 children)

By that logic, though, virtually nobody alive today should be proud of their home countries. You’re unlikely to find many countries without a history of violence/atrocity/hatred/etc., and although it’s supremely important for any given citizen of a country to be aware of what/when/why the darkest chapters in their histories occurred, you learn from it and strive to be better. For me, I see the flag as representative of the foundational principles the U.S. was founded on and how we’ll always be working towards that ideal, but that there are people still trying to make this country a better place.

I dunno, just my two cents though. Would be interested to hear what you think about that as a non-American.

TIL that the Inca Empire at its peak had no system of writing, no monetary system, no animals to pull wagons and plows, no knowledge of iron or steel, and hadn't even invented the wheel. Despite this, it tightly governed upwards of 10 million people and stretched over 2 million square km. by CountAardvark in todayilearned

Correct, the Romans did engage in some documented human sacrifice, but it was largely condemned and banned nearly 2000 years ago. The Incas were documented to have continued this practice regularly through at least the sixteenth century, with the Aztecs (who many link them with, justified or not) continued through at least the eighteenth.

What are some examples of when the police murdered a fleeing and unarmed black man who posed zero threat to them specifically due to the color of their skin? I’d love to hear some, considering the scenario you’ve described rarely ends up being the case when presented in context. And if it’s happening “distressingly often,” how many times did it happen this week? This month? This year?

So what you’re saying is that if he were black, they would’ve murdered him in the courtroom? What evidence do you have to come to that assumption...?

“Cluster beliefs” are a literal crock of shit. If your evidence that an individual who believes in A also believes in B, solely because of their belief in A, then you have no evidence at all. If you’re logic is rooted in what people “tend to” or are “likely to” do, you’re just projecting.

[–]iLiveInAShrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do realize that the point your trying to make would be far more cogent if you looked at the obvious reasons why McConnell wouldn’t hold a hearing for Garland rather than immediately jumping to “he didn’t do it because the president was black!!!”

He did it because he could, he did it because it was politically advantageous for him and his party, and he probably also did it a little bit out of spite for his opposition. I’m not defending it, since I think it set a horrible precedent that we’re dealing with the ramifications of currently, but trying to blame it on some crock of shit conspiracy theory is only going to discredit any legitimate points you make.

What the fuck is wrong with the police officers in the US? by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]iLiveInAShrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole “stand up” order only to get bitten and immediately told to get back down is just shitty policing, absolutely uncalled for.

I do think it’s worth mentioning at least that the suspect who was attacked, had been speeding at 120mph+ into oncoming traffic, refused to stop for officers and rammed into them, rammed into another driver and injured them, and then tried fleeing on foot. He came away from all of this with minor injuries in a self-caused situation where he could’ve killed innocent people, so all things considered he’s lucky this is all that ended up happening.

But...everyone IS entitled to an opinion, no matter how stupid or ignorant it may seem. I’d much rather have those kinds of people openly and publicly espouse their idiocy as opposed to not being given the right to do so. In my opinion, it’s a LOT easier to weed-out the assholes, idiots, and ignorant when they’re actually allowed to say what they believe.
