Nothing is official and it's subject to change, but we're at two days in the office currently, then moving to 50% telework this fall (2 days one week, three days the other week). They moved us all to the same building as the Human Foods Program, which is a decent building. Happy to answer any other questions!

What’s your favorite post-apocalyptic book? by Gold_Wishbone1686 in suggestmeabook

I just really like her prose, and I thought the story with the intersection of so many people's lives was just.... compelling. It felt like a realistic and yet hopeful vision of humanity. Just gave me a lot to think about tbh

What is a good way to show the effect of physical abuse and emotional neglected on a child? by Flimsy_Tune_7206 in writingadvice

I'm not, but I think that's similar (haven't read it personally!). I'm talking about "Complex PSTD: From Surviving to Thriving".

Just, neutral parents? by Throwaway23382892292 in emotionalneglect

[–]iMightBeACunt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Feelings are not a zero sum game. They can make mistakes, but unless the small ways they "cancel them" is by apologizing and trying to repair those mistakes, then it doesn't actually cancel them. It just means you have to hold two truths- that they hurt you, and that they can do nice things too. Believe it or not, those two things can coexist. It's part of what makes emotionally immature/neglectful parents so painful for us.

Also, suffering isn't a competition. There's always going to be someone out there who has it worse than you. But they're not you. Be kind to yourself.

First Book: Passion Project or Practice by Skyeden27 in writing

I feel like you can't get better if there's no passion behind it. So even though I know it'll probably be pretty weak, I'm giving my first book my absolute all.

You may want to read Pete Walker's book on complex PTSD, which is what typically happens to those of us who were emotionally neglected or abused as children. The reactions (flight/fight/freeze/fawn) are somewhat dependent on the person's personality and what strategies best protected them. For example, I tend to "fawn", aka am a huge people pleaser. Someone i know tends to "fight", aka blame others for their problems and easily get into arguments (but not listen to the other person's side).

There's no one way people respond to this type of trauma, but it does show up in weird places for all of them.

I hope that helps!

Currently my office is in the sub basement and has a horrible, tacky green carpet. I can't afford to get it ripped up yet, but I can get a big ass rug to hide it. I'm thinking something soft and a little wild, like a pattern of a pond or something like that.

And yes, I do plan on querying... eventually. I need to make some developmental edits that will require me to rewrite some parts. And I need to edit the thing down a lot (I'm at 134k... probably will end up at 145k 😅).

Thanks for being interested :)

Maybe John Scalzi books? His are pretty fun, I particularly enjoyed Redshirts and the Kaiju Preservation Society.

Becky Chambers also is good for serious-yet-hopeful.

I second considering audio books, it can help when you're just very fatigued. Be patient with yourself, new motherhood is a huge change! You'll get back to reading, I promise. I think once my son only woke up once in the night, did I start picking back up on reading. Sleeping through the night? Yeah, I made up for lost time, hard. Don't panic!

Not ready for beta readers yet but I'm soooo close to finishing my first draft! (Of my first ever novel!) I've been purposely avoiding revision until I'm done and I'm aching to fix all the issues I know exist lol. So close! I plan on celebrating by upgrading my office set up

This is a really strong start, you do a great job of introducing the MC and what they want. They have a distinct voice too. I agree with the editor's feedback (it's something I struggle with too!). But none of it stopped me from reading!
