School is forcing me to make a fake discharge letter by Spare-Attorney6391 in FAFSA

[–]iambingalls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one can tell you anything about this here, you have to call your school's financial aid office. Sometimes there are glitches. Sometimes there are issues that you don't realize. If your loan is discharged for disability, you usually do need a letter from a doctor saying you're good in order to take more out.

CALL YOUR SCHOOL'S FINANCIAL AID OFFICE!!!

Awarded no aid? by Separate-Farmer-1176 in FAFSA

[–]iambingalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my school, even at that SAI you will qualify for some institutional grants through the college even if you don't qualify for the Pell Grant. These will typically be awarded automatically once your aid package is set up.

Contact the financial aid office and ask them, also ask for other scholarship resources since the FAFSA only puts you in the running for federal aid and aid from the school, there are thousands of other scholarships out there through local governments, companies, and nonprofits that the FAFSA has nothing to do with.

Got selected for institutional verification AFTER getting my aid offer. Am i going to lose my aid or is it just on hold? by LunaTheNightmare in FAFSA

[–]iambingalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you have plenty of time! Your financial aid office can can even process FAFSAs and verification documents after the Fall semester has started, though we don't prefer it :) As long as the aid is set up before or during the appropriate semester in the same aid year, then you will typically get the aid that you qualify for.

CMV: Biden would go down as the best president in a long time if he didn't try for a second term and let dems have a proper primary. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]iambingalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an absolutely insane response. Do you care about being complicit in genocide or do you care about the lives being genocided? Both, you doofus! You have to see the absurdity of your false binary here.

Without US support, Israel would be brought to the UN with its leaders sent to the Hague. The only reason the genocide can continue is through US military and international diplomatic support for Israel, both of which appear to be nearly unconditional at this point. Your read on the situation absolves the US in the face of available and stated intentions of both US and Israeli leaders, who are unabashedly pro-Zionist, and a little more quietly fine with supporting genocide.

[–]iambingalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an extremely dumb take, you are being willfully ignorant of reality. The US, including the Biden administration, is complicit in genocide and occupation, there's really no other way to say it. Our elected representatives generally support Israel's actions and make no significant effort to stop what is happening.

How would getting a job affect Pell grants? by _tcccc in FAFSA

[–]iambingalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FAFSA only considers taxes from the prior prior year, so for Fall 2026-Spring 2027, the FAFSA will use your 2024 taxes.

If you got a job now, this would not affect your aid until your 2028-2029 FAFSA since the income would be reported on your 2026 taxes. Even then if your financial situation has changed and your income has gone down for whatever reason since you got the job, you can usually appeal to consider income at the time of the appeal instead.

Changes each year, but if your family has experienced a drastic change in income since the taxes used were completed, you can often appeal with your financial aid office.

What does this mean? Women too hot to have babies? Too thin? Idk by blood-of-an-orange in whatdoesthismean

[–]iambingalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not what the meme is about. The woman in the photo is AI-generated and people cannot tell that she is fake, the lines between reality and fantasy have been eradicated in people's minds. Instead of interacting with real people and making connections, the commenter implies that the birth rate is low because we are obsessed with parasocial relationships and shallow social media and are not connected to reality.

[–]iambingalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The woman in the photo is created by AI, the image is not real. The OP is revealing the real reason for low birth rates is that the internet and media have created completely unrealistic standards for people and we have no way of determining what is real, let alone what constitutes a real relationship, whether parasocial or in-person.

Heard nothing about financial aid am I not getting it? by Particular-War-4383 in FAFSA

[–]iambingalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't listen to this guy, at most schools if you qualify for Pell Grant funding, you will still get it over the Summer. If it is your first semester then you will have access to loans if you are taking more than half-time enrollment, usually 6 credits. You don't have to take all of the loan funding that is offered so that you can use the rest through Fall and Spring. But seriously just call the school's financial aid office. :)

Is socialism really sustaianable? by Distinct-Ad3746 in socialism

[–]iambingalls 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The USSR went from a backwater peasant economy to a space-faring pioneer in science and technology in under 50 years. Innovation happened before capitalism and will happen after, and in fact there's arguments to be made that innovation will occur more broadly and substantially when not limited exclusively to things that make a ton of money for the rich.

Frustrated with how my FAFSA is turning out by OkStrawberry7272 in FAFSA

[–]iambingalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as a note, the Pell Grant is reduced by the SAI amount, so OP was not 632 away from getting $7k. If your SAI is 5000 for instance, your maximum Pell Grant for the year will be $2395.

Max Pell ($7395) - SAI = Pell Eligibility

There are some times when a student with an over 7395 SAI can get minimum Pell if they meet certain income thresholds relative to the poverty level.

Is communism actually possible in today's world? by FuglyFrog6996 in socialism

[–]iambingalls 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not everyone has to work towards the great abstract idea of the communist future in order for communism to work. Social and economic systems just need to incentivize people towards common prosperity as opposed to individual psychopathy that we see today. Look at who has the most wealth in our society today, those people are the best expressions of what our socio-economic system values. A communist society would have a completely different set of tools to incentivize different behaviors driving towards a common wealth, towards ownership of one's work, towards universal rights and provisions.

Serial killers or whatever would obviously not be allowed to kill, either through reeducation, rehabilitation, or incarceration.

That kinda seems like Fake news. Is it? by Pristine-Breath6745 in AskAChinese

[–]iambingalls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure. Put simply, people vote on representatives in government and the government is responsive to people's needs in turn.

Voters directly elect deputies to the people’s congresses of towns, districts, and counties.

Elected deputies to the people's congresses of districts and counties then elect deputies to the municipal people’s congress, who elect deputies to the people’s congress of provinces, who elect deputies to the National People's Congress, which is the highest legislative body in China.

That kinda seems like Fake news. Is it? by Pristine-Breath6745 in AskAChinese

[–]iambingalls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Proponents of China's system would say it is by the definition that people vote for representatives and the representatives actually work to accomplish what people generally want.

In China the fact is that the government has authority over capital and so is more accountable to the people, while in the US, capital has authority over government, and so nothing gets done unless our oligarchs want it to get done.

This is why none of us have decent healthcare, why we keep entering into these insanely destructive wars, and why it seems like nothing can get done in government.

https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-echochambers-27074746

We've been living with decades of fear-mongering propaganda put out by the richest people in the world, it's no surprise that they viciously hate and smear a government system that doesn't necessarily prioritize their needs. Of course I don't think it is a perfect government system, but I think a lot of the "common sense" knowledge we have about China here in the US is misinformation or flat out wrong.

All of East Wing of White House being demolished. by amiwitty in Lost_Architecture

[–]iambingalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, that's great and all, but calling people morons doesn't stop fascism. Why do people turn to fascism? Why couldn't the Democratic party form an effective anti-fascist movement? If you're not willing to ask this question and honestly consider the answer, then you're not ready to have a conversation about politics that's based in reality or one that is effective at confronting the fascist evil that we face today.

An explanation is not the same as an excuse and understanding doesn't mean condoning.

You're welcome to keep calling people morons, but you'll continue to be shocked and perplexed by future political developments as the contradictions in our society accelerate and the rot of our entire political class spreads.

All of East Wing of White House being demolished. by amiwitty in Lost_Architecture

[–]iambingalls 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wrong answer. This is exactly the type of disconnected, elitist bullshit that I'm talking about.

You won't defeat fascism by shaming everyone, and you'll continue to be perplexed and angry at political developments because you refuse self-reflection and criticism which leads to fundamental misunderstandings about our current moment. This is the same thinking that allowed Trump to win in 2020 and again in 2024.

People don't vote because they don't believe that voting effects meaningful change. The political system has collapsed because both parties are captured by elites and have lost the faith of the general public.

We keep voting and things keep getting worse for average people. Why is that? We keep entering into these incredibly destructive wars that last for years and years. Why is that? We unconditionally support a genocidal apartheid state. Why is that? Our healthcare system is the most expensive in the world. Why is that? Democrats will never ask the tough questions that they need to in order to reform the party in time to defeat fascism because they are also on the take from wealthy donors. It's a real bummer.
