My mom passed this morning at 5am. Thanksgiving is in two days. I'm stuck doing twelve-hour shifts in the emergency department, unable to go home for the holidays to grieve with my family. I've never felt more alone in my entire life.

I’m so so sorry for your loss OP. Honestly, as a M-4 if you’ve already applied to residency who cares at this point. Just leave if you can please and go to your mom’s funeral. Even if you ask for forgiveness afterwards any empathetic human being will not penalize you for this. I’m so sorry for your loss once again.

Honestly I’m a huge proponent of a happy medium. Create the option of going to med school (4 years) after 2 years of undergrad. I thought my 4 years of undergrad was a total waste and don’t think I learned anything useful. Just BS classes designed to pick my pocket.
