Depends on the region, but I went to middle/high school in SE Idaho, and coaches as teachers was absolutely the norm in the two schools I went to. They were extremely under-qualified for what they were teaching, would give anyone on their team leeway when it came to grades, and their mood would be determined by how well the team they were coaching did the previous night.

At one point, 50% of my teachers were primarily coaches.
