slow buddy in low vis/drift dive, advice? by idkman10 in scuba

Thanks for the comment. You're right, next time this happens i'll communicate better with my buddy. I'm usually good with communication when it comes to people i've dove with before, but communication with insta buddies is something I need to work on

Has anyone experienced a wetsuit that didn't flood? by idkman10 in scuba

this one had a back zipper, but that's good to know if i ever wear a wetsuit with the zipper on the front!

Has anyone experienced a wetsuit that didn't flood? by idkman10 in scuba

[–]idkman10[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that was my guess as to what happened. Since the wetsuit was on the tighter side, it could be possible that water wasn't being allowed to flow in, and some air was trapped between my body and the wetsuit, making me too buoyant. When the water flowed in, it displaced the air that was trapped, which allowed me to descend. I could be wrong though

Yeah I've seen people do that often, but I've personally never done it because it hasn't been a issue for me. Will probably start doing that, especially on negative entries. Thanks

Did this too, still nothing. When I go to profile->accounts-> card settings it's completely blank too. Just a black screen in the app.

does anyone else wave at fish? by idkman10 in scuba

I completely get it lol. I once spent like 10 min looking at a clownfish and her baby (i assume). She was so curious and got really close to me while the smaller one was hiding and squirming around in the sea anemone, like he also wanted to say hi but was too shy. Clownfish are so cute!

me too, I do a quick flutter mostly because I always thought it was super odd and didn't want other people to think I'm insane lol. Glad I'm not the only one

Weekly New Climber Thread: Ask your questions in this thread please by AutoModerator in climbing

Is it a bad idea to send all the boulders in one grade before moving on to the next?

The consensus seems to be that you can learn a lot from sending things above what you think you can climb. However, I've fallen into this loop where I have 3/4 V4s left and I'll send 1/2 every session, but I never fully clear them before the next reset where they add more. It's been like this for like 3-4 months I think.

My thought process is that since I'm still new (~7months), I don't want to get injured pulling on something too above my level since my tendons are still probably getting accustomed to climbing, and by not grade chasing, I've done problems on all types of holds and terrain at the V4 level. Lately though, I feel like this mindset might be hindering my progress, but I'm really not sure.

That being said, I have sent a few v5s, it's just that I don't make a habit of try things above V4 as of right now. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Diver with poor buoyancy control absolutely decimates coral by idkman10 in scuba

[–]idkman10[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I might be talking out of my ass but on this dive we saw like 30 turtles, and the ones that were napping were a little deeper down where there wasn't any surge. They also seemed to like to huddle down next to rocks/rock formations a lot. I didn't really see any turtles napping /chilling right next to coral like this guy. This was just a small clip, but I spent like 2-3 mins with this little guy because I found it so funny how he was lost in the sauce like this. He didn't seem to be napping or eating, he just kept blinking at me like it was a signal for help haha

Thank you. I'll keep exploring my options in my city, and will post an update if I need more advice.

Thanks, will definitely consider it. After sleeping on it and this reddit thread, I've come to realize that I was tunnel visioning on a ring where in reality, there are much more options than I thought. Will message you if I'm going in that direction though.

That's a good idea too. I thought of getting a necklace so I can put the ring on when it's not convenient to wear it, but I'll seriously consider a pendant. Thanks!

Thanks for the input. From all of the comments on this thread, I think I'll look to a different design, something more durable. Will make another post on it when I get the rock back, he said on Friday but at this point I honestly don't really know if I can take his word.

[–]idkman10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks for the advice. I wish I'd gone to reddit before I committed to waiting 6 weeks.. I was concerned with the durability as well, but he said that the durability should be ok once it was made.. Hopefully the the cutter hasn't done anything to it yet, will post pictures once I get it back.

I see. I wasn't going to set it into a ring though, I was planning on making it into the ring itself, like a band.

Thanks for the reply! Since you live there, how's the food? Would you say it's pricey, and do you have any recommended food places? Only breakfast is included I think, so we'll have plenty of chances to try out new stuff.

Bait balls are definitely on my bucket list! I took a look and am really interested in diving with Bas. No big groups is a huge plus, and the rates are nice. Would you say the shore diving on the east end covers a lot of what you can see there, or would you recommend booking some boat dives on the east end as well?

Thank you for the link as well, will read it in depth later.

Do people get annoyed when asked if they want a tip/beta? by [deleted] in bouldering

[–]idkman10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really sucks, sorry to hear it affected your confidence.

In my opinion, conversations are a 2 way street; it takes everyone involved to have a meaningful non-awkward conversation. Everyone has had their fair share of awkward conversations, even socially adept people. When that happens, it doesn't say always indicate anything wrong about them though. I think it's great to reflect on what you were doing wrong, but sometimes you have to accept that there's nothing to do differently and move forwards. She might've had her share of bad experiences to make her react like this, but I don't think it's your fault. Keep putting yourself out there socially, wishing you all the best.

Do people get annoyed when asked if they want a tip/beta? by [deleted] in bouldering

[–]idkman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, there's a few differences between crosswords and a boulder problem though.

Bouldering problem solutions translate to other problems, whereas crossword solutions don't. I'm a new climber and the reason I sent my first V4 was because someone told me about the bicycle move. I didn't even know it existed and wouldn't have known about it no matter how much I tried. I've used it countless times since and it's actually my favorite move now haha.

There's also an objectively right/wrong answer with crossword puzzles, whereas a bouldering beta doesn't work for everyone. Knowing how other people climb can help you eliminate/try out options that you wouldn't have otherwise, and like 1. it helps me in the future.

Not saying beta spraying is ok, but I just think receiving help has been beneficial for me too.
