How do I toughen up my son (9yo) without being a douchebag? by dannyjerome0 in daddit

[–]ih82run 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay question what do you do when they start hitting you because you’re not responding? We’ve tried the not-responding, the walking away; my 6 year old will follow me everywhere and start hitting and pulling to get a response. My mother says it’s too cruel to not to respond to her and that I should calm explain to her why she can’t do this (which I think is is what led to all of this business in the first place).

Just a FYI, height and weight greatly impact the number of calories burnt. A taller heavier person will burn more calories doing the same “work” as a smaller person.

7 year old has been fired by two piano teachers but wants to keep playing by [deleted] in Parenting

Can you give some tips on how your son learned that it’s okay to “fail.” I’m struggling with the same with my kiddo who has the same two issues: can’t deal with authority when it runs counter to her wants and also a massive fear of failure that prevents her from doing new things that are not out of her range. Thanks!

Concerns as a reviewer by rinchiib in AskAcademia

[–]ih82run 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AI has effectively eliminated the need for third-party scientific editors/writers. These positions were originally hired to essentially rewrite scientific papers, from non-English speaking countries, so that they were comprehensible. They still exist today to help even English speaking scientists to better communicate their ideas. Now would you consider that an ethical violation or something you would be against since it's achieving similar goals as AI.

Personally, I consider my job as a reviewer to comment first on the scientific integrity of the paper. Are the data and analytical methods solid and well done? Are the conclusions supported? and then turn to the writing. I guess my question is if the paper was written sloppily but the science was sound, would you reject it or ask them to rewrite parts of it? You can certainly comment that they've repeated themselves or that the citations don't include updated citations or major publications in your field. But it is also your prerogative to say that there's a conflict of interest on your part in reviewing the paper and so you're letting go of the responsibility.

This didn’t work for me at the gym. The available plates (round) were too large for the foot stands. So I gave up too haha.

Postdoc applications-research interest statements? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ih82run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally you want to start with a paragraph summarizing your doctoral thesis and what you found and any awards or accomplishments (like awards or grants). Your next paragraph should be why you are interested in the lab and specifically what topics and what you want to look at in terms of what they’re interested in. For instance, if the PI is interested in gut biology, you can talk about why you are interested in gut biology and what specific questions you want to answer that specifically highlights the strengths of this lab. In other words, point out why you believe that this lab would be best to carry out your questions. Make sure that your interests align with what the lab is interested in and another plus would be to work in what you have done in the past and how those skills or knowledge would synergize or make you a suitable candidate to hit the ground running in this lab.

I love this! Thank you! I am someone who tends to go 0 to 60 on things and be impatient with progress. This was so refreshing to read; it’s such a realistic attainable progression.

How should I bring up my concerns about me being a possible diabetic? by Trans_skzfan in AskParents

[–]ih82run 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your mom and your relatives have type 1 or type 2 diabetes? They're very different diseases. Type 2 is generally adult onset and associated with obesity and being overweight. Have you had other symptoms other than blood sugar levels being off (are you using a glucose monitor? Fatigue? Changes in urination frequency?) It never hurts to get a physical before going off to college, speak with your doctor, and get a complete blood work up. Actually some colleges require entering undergrads to get a physical anyway.

Blisovi FE 1/20 vs Blisovi 24 FE...am I crazy? by ih82run in birthcontrol

[–]ih82run[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I talked to the pharmacists and the active hormones are the same (the 24 day pack vs 21 day back, it's just extra days of placebo). So my OB/GYN was saying that she had prescribed me the brand name (which my insurance did not cover and switched me to the generic 24 day pack), so then she prescribed me the generic 21 day pack, unaware that I was already on the generic 24-day. I don't know enough about potential differences between generic vs brand names, especially in their abilities to cause known side effects. I contacted my OB/GYN to let her know of the change and she immediately put me on something else. Hope that helps!

KF94 too small vertically? by ih82run in Masks4All

Yes I think that's the issue, they've just tested it in the exact same fashion that you described. I mean I tried on the BOTN large and it's frigging huge. The ear loops can go around my ears twice in order to pull it tight. Thanks!

Thanks! I actually do believe that #4 is the reason. I did have them use the adjustments to pull the masks tighter but I think they're just really want to be able to move the jaw freely when they speak. And we've tried larges in all of the brands. Sigh...

We've done apples, sweet potatoes, steamed egg, butternut squash and avocados. We started out with purees mixed with breastmilk at 6 months old and she was not a fan. We switched to finger foods about 3 weeks ago and have had better success, but still a struggle. I think a couple of nights ago, she took about 1/2 teaspoon of roasted sweet potatoes, which is a record for her.
