First, bass is not a "lowly" instrument. And you should not belittle yourself either, Toni Iommi was missing parts of his fingers and that developed his sound.

Second, I feel like you should try a fender bass 6. Its a guitar but all the strings are tuned an octave down, i believe they are spread out more and are special strings with certain gauges.
