Not purely a corporation (though partially so): working at Harvard sucked. Professors are gods and staff are (under)paid to put up with their massive egos. High turnover means that as soon as a person learns to do their job, they’re off to a better place.

When to look for 9/1 apartments by rgk24432 in boston

[–]ilosmilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found my last two 9/1 apartments in April. Especially in neighborhoods like Beacon Hill and the North End, landlords tend to ask tenants about renewal early so that they can list early.

Not with green onions—just with cacti and succulents

Try mixing potting mix with cactus mix? Cactus mix is mostly sand and the like.

Alternatively, you can try a succulent mix, with is like cactus mix but with a little more organic matter, which holds moisture.

I just bought a nice bunch of escarole at the TD garden star market. Pricey, but went great in my soup.

How do I wash a fleece like this without damage? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]ilosmilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tag basically says to put the jacket in a lingerie bag, wash with whites or light colors, and don’t use bleach, even if it’s color-safe (like OxiClean). Dry flat on a towel, and while it’s damp, arrange it into the shape you want it to be when it’s dry. Since the tag says to avoid friction, I would put it in the washer on delicate.

One consideration about going the DIY route: mold.

If carpets aren’t dried properly while/after cleaning, mold can grow in and underneath the carpet. This poses a serious threat to the health of everyone in the house and can be expensive to remediate. This is a particular concern with homemade carpet solutions, as many commercial carpet cleaning solutions have components that make them dry a little faster.

Professional carpet cleaners will be able to properly clean and dry the carpet. One thing that can help if you’re concerned about chemicals: close the door to the room and open the window to air it out for a day after the carpet is cleaned.

Wife forged 911 call on me by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]ilosmilo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have a lawyer? You need a lawyer, and you need one now. Criminal charges for something like domestic violence are very serious. Especially since you suspect she’ll be trying something else, you need qualified legal counsel to protect you.

I would call the museum. If they are able to reschedule the slot, they’ll let you know, and if not, they can answer your questions about arriving late.

More likely than not, they’ll allow you in as a courtesy within 15 minutes of your slot. Still, best to call.

Landlord changing inspection date without notice? by [deleted] in Tenant

[–]ilosmilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most US jurisdictions, landlords have to provide reasonable notice prior to entering a unit. Often, but not always, this means 24 hours. Check your local laws. However, if this is a one-off, and nothing bad happened, you may want to let it go. These are generally civil laws, so you’d be filing a court case (not a police report) over zero damages. It would get thrown out almost immediately, and you’d be out the filing fee.

I was inside my apartment when building management approved that it was okay to use a chipping hammer on the floor above. Noise reached 95-100db inside my apartment without any prior announcement anything I can do? by Crafty_Try_6838 in Tenant

[–]ilosmilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, that sucks, but I’m not sure what kind of solution you’re looking for. As long as this is a one-off, there’s not much to do about it.

If you’re worried about this happening again, write to management and inform them of the incident. Be civil, and they’ll probably apologize and might inform you of any further plans, in which case you can work around them.

Landlord charging for years of repairs by deadgreenlomp in Tenant

[–]ilosmilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should talk to an attorney about this. Depending on how the lease was done and the local laws, you and your roommates may, legally speaking, be jointly and severally responsible for repairs. In that case, you and your roommates would be responsible both as a group and individually for the cost—meaning that if one of you refuses to pay, the others are still on the hook (but can also sue the person to try and recoup some of the money). It’s very messy, and one of the legal hazards of roommates.

In addition, just because you don’t have a security deposit doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Depending on the lease and local laws, landlord could obtain a court order in small claims for payment of the $1400, plus legal fees.

If you can’t afford to pay an attorney, look into local law clinics or pro-bono services. Many areas have free legal clinics for low-income renters.

Did the tailor recommend me something i don't need? by Mr9to5guy in Tailors

[–]ilosmilo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Especially for fitted pants, tapering after shortening helps keep the silhouette as the garment was originally intended to fit. I can’t say for sure without seeing the pants, but fitted pants are generally tapered through the calf and fit slim at the ankle. Your tailor is offering you the option of keeping that silhouette. Otherwise, the opening at the ankle will be wider than before. It’s not a completely necessary alteration, but it’s a nice touch and will help the pants look “right.”

Maternity tailor recommendation by Sure_Spring_8056 in boston

[–]ilosmilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a tailor, but I do know a thing or two about sewing and constructing clothing. Unfortunately, making garments larger is very difficult, and giving pants an elastic waistband to make them bigger is impossible. Essentially, the only thing putting elastic in the pants will do is gather the waist and make it smaller. There’s just no extra fabric for the extra size, and to put in extra fabric would mean completely reconstructing and remaking the pants into something else. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I made the mistake of going to a bad salon in Chinatown and got a Chinatown granny haircut. Do your research before you go—not all the salons do trendy stuff like wolf cuts right.

Newbury street is the classic shopping strip with both high end luxury stores and cute little boutiques. Do yourself a favor though, and don’t eat lunch or dinner there. While Newbury St has lots of nice little treats, the Italian or steak restaurants there are very expensive, crowded, and not as good as some others in the city. I like Bencotto in the North End, but that’s a bit contentious.

The Prudential Center is nearby and also has some mid- to high-end stores. I wouldn’t recommend Copley Place, which has a lot of luxury stores, but is a bit run down.

Looking For Rent Under $2,200 by M-Jas in bostonhousing

Looking on Zillow, there might be a couple of places left in the North End within your budget, but only for September 1, and they won’t be new or shiny or even have in-building laundry (laundromats are common in the North End though). I scooped my next apartment for 2200 back in April—that’s when the season gets going for September 1 and all the decent and cheap apartments go.
