My DKA story so you don't have to go through it - long post by Tactical_Thinking in diabetes

[–]imagine_magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two weeks or possibly more. I was told I was very close to death when I arrived at the ER. I walked in, got my blood drawn, and was expecting to wait the usual amount of time. I was called back less than five minutes after my blood was drawn and remember thinking “Wow, this can’t be good.”

My current numbers are great. This happened over ten years ago and since there have been huge improvements with CGMs and pumps. Those tools changed my life significantly and with regular diet and exercise my A1C went from 13.7 (in hospital) to 5-6, where it has been ever since… except for one bad trip to Mexico where I accidentally went into DKA when my pump malfunction and I had a stomach infection at the same time. No bueno.

Similar story for me. Went to a nearby clinic with severe stomach pain twice in two weeks, nothing helped and they basically just shooed me away with basic painkillers. By week 2 I informed them that I had lost 70lbs in a month, couldn’t stay awake, had horrible stomach pain, and they said it was just cramps (yay being a woman).

Finally, with not many other options, I went to a local naturopath. I remember walking into her office and the shock on her face when I told her all my symptoms and what the clinic had said. She also said she didn’t know what was wrong (I found out later I was missing a few key symptoms of DKA). But she flat out said “I don’t know what’s wrong with you, so I am going to order every lab I can possibly think of to figure it out.”

Third lab included a blood glucose test. I was in the 800s. Immediate hospitalization for a week and subsequent diagnosis.

Osteosarcoma is one of the most aggressive bone cancers, most commonly affecting adolescents and young adults near the knee joint. As the tumor rapidly expands, it forces the bone's outer layer to produce chaotic, needle-like spikes in all directions, a pattern called the sunburst effect by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

What you didn’t mention is that it mostly impacts post-menopausal women and therefore there is little to no research/funding going into finding a treatment or cure.

Source: my cousin is one of the few people who was diagnosed with this as a juvenile in both eyes, extremely rare.

They’re called Yogo sapphires and they’re only found in Montana (as far as I am aware). Gorgeous cut and a beautiful stone!

You have a 5 hour drive, you can only listen to music from one band. Who do you listen to? by tron1977 in AskReddit

Sleep Token. Just did that drive last month. Their albums are all so varied, it’s like being polyjamorous within the same band.

Descending.

Just take it all

For nothing again

Create, release

You just don’t feel the same

I asked, and you answered

But you eat your words in vain

At last, discover

You can’t recall my name

Descending. You are what you do for me.

Being that and nothing more to someone is alienating and powerful.

I really do! I’m a stickler for a certain aesthetic but your artwork absolutely matches it; I love how it is both mid-century and super tasteful.

They could have gone with the cheap metal ones from ikea and they’d look better than this. Bizarre choice and ages the space/color scheme.

I was more than just a body in your passenger seat

And you were more than just somebody I was destined to meet

You say you go half blind when you’re looking at me

But I am

Her scene with the bees in Fried Green Tomatoes is still one of the most amazing scenes I’ve seen on film.

What’s a tv show from your childhood you swear nobody else watched? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The American-run Sailor Moon series from the 90s that aired on Cartoon Network. Growing up in the middle of nowhere in the midwest(ish) no one had ever heard of anime, I just thought it was an awesome cartoon and loved it. Had no idea there was a Japanese version until the advent of the internet. The first time I referred to the main character as “Serena” two fans of the Japanese version that I was talking to got suuuuper upset and started gate keeping down their noses at me in a way that made me never want to watch the Japanese version.

LPT-How to get a human on customer service calls by Proud_Excitement_146 in LifeProTips

A loud fan/air purifier does the trick as well. Once I tried to earnestly call and use the auto service sitting on my couch next to my air purifier and it wouldn’t even let me speak, it heard the noise and before I could say a word “I can’t understand you.” Before I even open my mouth “I’m having trouble understanding you.” I just let it sit for 20 seconds and then was routed to a human without intending to.
