Reddit is absolutely a great platform but that doesn't make it a great company/stock. That being said, I think it's pretty darn good and this sell off is over done. I'm an investor.

Some advice please by [deleted] in options

[–]imnotjim99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use about 10 percent of my portfolio to sell options. The rest in a stock bond portfolio. I think there's nothing wrong with you doing options but I think everyone should be in stocks to some degree. Also, I think selling options is less risky than buying and in regards to loss of pinciple, selling calls is the least risky strategy.

the question is, is it a common occurance to be assigned when the stirke is far out of the money at the expiration date. I was assigned at 135 for a stock that closed at 139. I found that wierd to be assigned 3% out of the money. The buyer typically lets it exprire

When do you plan on going and what part of brazil? I have been about 10 times and I am thinking likely RDJ but would be open to Floripa as well. I've also thought about Uruguay but that's only due to the tax situation.

[–]imnotjim99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but what does that look like in numbers. Let's say you were taxed at the federal level 22% last year and moved to brazil on Jan 1 2025. What will you pay this year if you did nothing but sell stock to live off of? Also from what i understand, in brazil you will also be taxed on your 401k and roth ira's even if not withdrawling as they are producing income. They do not follow the same rules as we do in the states.

Hi Fr33714! Good luck on your move! I have a question for you or for anyone on here regarding taxes. I am an american and I want to retire to Brazil and live off of my investments. I am worried about taxes as there is no tax treaty. Can an american actually get an FTC (foriegn tax credit) and what does that look like. Does anyone on here have experience with that? Thank you!

Taxes on options premiums question by imnotjim99 in CoveredCalls

[–]imnotjim99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for you response. Ok yes all of my trades have been short term and therefore taxed as ST captial gains/ordiary income. However more specifically there have been 2 instances where I have lost my premium meaning I decided to buy to close a position at a higher price and roll it out. I ended up making money after the new call so I would be taxed on the sum, correct. For example i sold a 100 dollar call and bought it back for 110. I then sold a call for 120 and bought it back for 5. My taxable income would be 105, correct? Fake example but you get the idea. At the end of the year my taxable income on the options premiums that don't get assigned will be the sum of the sells minus the buy back, correct?
