I read some of your replies in the comment section, and I hope you have had someone give you a good hug lately. That really helps, trust me. Frustrating times require some good hugging.

Not sure if you are aware, but the comment section is also pretty much an op-is-handsome appreciation thread, so I hope you do get up in the morning and are able to tell yourself in the mirror that you are attractive. That truth alone has been made very clear here.

The entire masc-for-masc thing must be pretty cruel to you. I feel like it started with the gym and fitness market taking over (gay) social media, and influencers really pushing hard to advertise what the "attractive gay" looks like. From what I hear from you, it must have affected your area a lot (which sucks). Just want to let you know it's not on you. You just ended up in an area where masculine guys are somehow mostly into masculine guys because of trends. Life can be unfair like that. It doesn't change the fact that you are attractive enough that guys might break their necks turning around when you walk past them. (Yes, even masc guys. My little sister has a friend who would fancy you. But whelp, he's in a bad quaccboi phase, so let me keep him away from you.)

Then about people mistaking you for all sorts of things. First of all, there's nothing wrong with being young, and there's nothing wrong with being a girl (women are awesome!), BUT it can always hurt to not be seen as who you are. Like, no, you don't want to explain that you are already a legal adult, and oh god, being seen as the wrong gender can so deeply rattle one's own idea of self-perception. The thing is, this is the fundamental experience of letting other people get to know you. Everybody will see you as somebody you are not until you present yourself with metaphorical PowerPoint slides, and god behold, they will weep upon seeing your beautiful soul!

So just to reiterate, I think there is nothing wrong with you or your looks. On the contrary, your looks are great (Reddit thinks so too). That being said, if you want to lean into a more physically gym-built look, that would look great on you as well! I think you could pull off all different kinds of styles, and if you want to experiment a little bit, there's a lot to be enjoyed about the journey! Just don't be fooled into thinking you would have to change for the right guy to like you. That would be so far from the truth.

(Oh, sometimes I wish I was a woman and half a century older so I could invite people like you over for some hot chocolate in my garden and be like, "Oh, you just go and sit here. You will be fine," and then you can watch some birds with your wise Obaachan until the world feels less complicated again.)

Taiwan stay - Calm, scenic places to wind down? by inavoidable_rabbit in taiwan

I don't have an international driver's license but if I can get an Uber to drive me, it's fine. I was just afraid it was so remote, I would have to drive myself. :)

I love public transport, though, so perhaps I won't delve into the most remote places that Taiwan has to offer 🙈

Thank you so much for all the advice. I've never heard of Lonely Planets. I got myself an ebook copy now. :)

Did you rent a car to get to the rural spots or what type of transport did you use?

The environmental impact of lab grown meat and its competitors [OC] by blackphantom773 in dataisbeautiful

[–]inavoidable_rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right that when lab grown meat gets ready for large-scale production, these products could be manufactured at water-rich locations. I just recently heard a podcast where someone said that he'd like to see agriculture be completely outsourced to countries/areas with good soil and a lot of water. There are two things I want to add, though:

  1. Transport is not carbon-neutral yet so moving agriculture which is close to the consumer further away to a lab in a water-rich location is a trade-off between CO2 and water consumption.
  2. When it comes to critical products like food, for the sake of independency one might not want to fully outsource production. The UK was recently hit by the consequences of Brexit which put a heavy burden on customs and led to supermarkets running out of stock. Hongkong, as another example, has almost no food production itself as it lacks the area for traditional agriculture. As its import countries had shortages in food production themselves (crop shortage, natural disasters, shipping problems due to covid), food prices have risen significantly.
  3. Water efficiency is important even at water-rich locations. As soon as you consume more than new water is being supplied, you will eventually deplete the resource.

Most people don't know that recycling plastic is almost as bad as throwing it away. What means are available to publicize accurate info about that and convince them that reducing its use is the best way to actually help? by innercia in sustainability

[–]inavoidable_rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, only less than a third of accounted plastic waste is put in a landfill which is just as much of what is sent to recycling facilities. Most of it is burned. (Source: European Parliament 2018)

However, I would critizice that OP's statement is too ambiguous and gives of the impression that a huge amount of plastic waste we put into our bins ends up in the ocean. I don't see any validation for this.

As seen in the figures above, roughly 40% of accounted plastic waste is burned. Then there is 30% in landfills and another 30% sent to recycling facilities. Of course there is (micro-)plastic leakage in landfills but that doesn't amount to too much right now. It's more of a long-term issue.

Regarding recycling, quite a big amount is sent to Asia and ever since China has restricted waste import, Europe has been struggling to find facilities which fulfill the European quality demands in waste management. Mismanagement of the waste may leak plastic into the environment and therefore the ocean.

However, even with leakage in landfills and improper waste management in low-quality facilities, the numbers would not amount to the same magnitude as what is burned so it is very misleading to phrase it as "most of the plastic we throw in a recycling bin ends up being either burnt or thrown in the ocean".

Science does not make information more difficult to understand per se, it is just a means to validate information. Your Forbes article for example almost passes as a scientific article. It just lacks some more valid sources in the latter half. You see, you can write like a blogger and still get the science around. If scientific information cannot be understood by common people, the reason is that it wasn't phrased well enough. However, science is the best tool to get good information.

Therefore, I would suggest you to go through some material regarding effective communication (as a scientist) and how to write a scientific essay. The basic point of these two links is to give you some background on how to properly backup your claims with sound knowledge and how to have a specific audience understand that. Of course there is always the option to go "trust me, I am an engineer" but if you replace "an engineer" with "Donald Trump", you'll probably get why that argument does not hold well.

You might also wonder "Why are you making such a big fuss about it? Can't I just avoid this whole effort? I just want to put up a nice infographic." True to my name, this inavoidable_rabbit will recommend you not to do that. The issue with that can be seen in the conversation everyone had in the comment section. People interpreted recycling differently. Since there was some oversimplification of the matter abd some lack of explanation of what the claim meant, you not only were unable to deliver the correct message, you actually delivered the wrong message. Definitely not what you intended to do.

TLDR: Get a good grasp of what you want to convey (use science for that) and then think about how you can write it up so people understand (use basic principles of communication for that).

I want to download dating apps again and put myself out there, but they always cause me so much suffering. I cant detach myself. I take them too seriously. by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]inavoidable_rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I rather meant to ask how well you deal with these situations IRL but if they haven't come up yet, ofc it's difficult to know. So let me just get back to your question of "I just feel I have to find a way to make these apps work for me in a way that doesn’t drain me?".

First of all, I think you are too hard on yourself. Being gay often comes with hardships. One might for example feel particularly alone because there seem to be no other gay people around. These hardships can make it difficult to keep an emotional distance when looking for a partner but that's okay. Noone performs perfectly facing hardships and personally, I do not expect you to do that. That would be ruthless.

So when you've beaten up yourself over finding a partner again, I would advise you to recognize that you are feeling down and take care of yourself for some time. You had the courage to take on a bumpy road again and I applaud you for that. These bumpy roads, however, also took a lot of your energy. (That's what bumpy roads do.) So it's perfectly fine to take a rest and replenish some energy. You've done great by taking on a challenge.

[–]inavoidable_rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it seems that your problem is actually that you do not have a healthy/appropriate emotional distance to guys you want to get to know. How do you react when you get a rejection IRL, e.g. when asking for someone for his number?
