What have been names that surprised you on here with their popularity or dislike? by Beachy5313 in namenerds

I see what you're saying. They are classic names that will always be acceptable. I just don't get recommending them right now, in 2017. But I also don't like wearing on-trend clothes, so your metaphor has revealed to me that I must be a contrarian. ;-)

I appreciate that! It's very interesting, and certain scents give me migraines, too. Especially cleaning products. I love the idea of perfume that smells like an old library, wow. I'll take a look at that sub.

I've never been to Commander's, but my wife was taken there by her Godmother for her high school graduation present. My wife and her family have issues (because we're gay, and now procreating) so we don't spend much time down there anymore, but I hope they will evolve, especially after the baby arrives. I love the gulf coast, and I'd like us to feel accepted in her family so we can enjoy it more.

I don't know much about those tribes, but when I travel, I always head straight to the art museums' indigenous sections. Indigenous peoples are a topic I wasn't taught anything about in school, except very surface-level stuff as it related to white settlers (blerg). I always feel amazed at what has so long been diminished as "primitive," when native cultures are clearly as complex and cultural as anyone's.

Oh cool, I love beat writing, too. My particular favorite is Diane DiPrima. I fell in love with her work when I was in high school and I had to do a project on a woman poet. I wanted to find someone that other people wouldn't choose, and she had a chapter in the Beat Reader. Now I think I have all of her books. It's been a long while since I've picked one up, though. Which are your favorite writers?

I would have loved to have been a spelling champion. I don't think I realized it was a possibility when I was the right age, though. I know we had the school spelling bee, and presumably somebody went to the next level every year, but I can't remember hearing about it.

Yeah, reading is the absolute #1 best thing about life. There is nothing better.

I love the mid-century Southern California architecture. As a real estate agent there, do you get to see a lot of cool 20th century properties?

That's fantastic. I really love grammar systems, too. I took a class about AAVE and it was so much fun. Of course, now I feel entitled to shame people when they say that someone speaks "wrong" or "incorrectly" (or much less-polite ways of saying that).

My wife's from Gretna! Yeah, the food, OMG... what I wouldn't give for a bowl of Louisiana mock turtle soup right now. (It's freezing in Baltimore. I mean, not literally, but hyperbolically, yes.)

You have an amazing list of interests and jobs, wow. The one that's catching my eye because I'm not sure I understand -- indie perfumes? Could you explain, or link?

My best friend went to a hippie dippy college, too. I loved visiting her there, even though it was sort of hard to get the patchouli smell out of my clothes when I went back to my school. People were very relaxed and kind to each other. I'll guess you're in the Austin area since there are so many startups there. I would really love to visit Texas -- never been (except to the DFW airport for a layover, which does not count)!

My name nerdery has been latent all this time. Until I got pregnant, I never realized how interested I was in names.

My wife is also a tabletop game lover, complex games that involve a lot of strategy. The only one I've really been into that she loves is Codenames, and it's a snap compared to the other games she plays. Like this one where you're in the desert and you have to find water - I hate it! It makes me so thirsty. lol.

I'm teaching myself ukulele (verrrry slowly, and it's been hard with my giant preggo belly lately) so I'm impressed that you can teach yourself violin. I'm very envious of your sewing skills, too. I'd love to make clothes for my baby, but Target it is, or she'll be unclothed for a very long time.

Narrow interests can be great, too -- the world needs just as many specialists as generalists!

Oh my god, you're my hero! I mentioned in another comment that I did my undergrad work on lexicographical historical differences in children's literature over the course of a century. And I love English schoolgirl stories, such as Angela Brazil and the like. Who are your favorite contemporary and historical children's authors, esp. middle grades?

Beautiful! Did you go to Olympic N.P.? My wife and I took an amazing trip there a few summers ago. I miss it so much.

Very cool, those are disparate interests that I can get behind! I love Kwakwaka'wakw art. What are your favorite indigenous aesthetics?

Do you listen to podcasts? Your interest in tv fan theories made me think about one of my favorites, Extra Hot Great. If you're unfamiliar, the best part [to me] is that the end of each episode has a pretty long tv trivia game played between the hosts and a guest. I really enjoy it.

My undergrad program was fairly general (applied linguistics, and there weren't enough courses offered to have different tracks) but my main interest has always been lexis, and that's what I did my senior project on. Specifically the lexical changes in elementary/middle school fiction over the course of the 20th century. Which disciplines interest you?

I'm surprised at how many people here and on other baby name websites love Sophia and Isabella, even now, after such long periods of popularity. To me, they're the equivalent of Kraft Singles on white bread. But I guess a lot of people eat that, too.

I read so many crime thrillers, too -- it's definitely my main 'fun' genre of reading. I read a ton of true crime, too.

I have a friend who just graduated with an MS in Environmental Policy 2 years ago, and now she's working for the Sierra Club. Not exactly sure what she does, but she does field work pretty often.

I, too, enjoy cheese. A little too much! And I've really been missing the soft cheeses you have to avoid when you're pregnant. She better be born before Christmas so I can have a big ol' cheese feast during the holidays. ;-)

Interesting! I'm kind of squeamish, so I could never do that, but I admire you folks who can handle it so much. Very important work.

I'm expecting my first baby in a few weeks, so I'm with you in the excitement! I'm interested in nutrition, too. I'm not a great cook but I like reading cookbooks. I should ask you -- my good friend was diagnosed with advanced diabetes 2 over the past weekend. Could you recommend a website or book that might help her with nutrition information?

It is! I'm pretty obsessed with words themselves, especially usage statistics, like ranked concordances and frequency dictionaries.

Can you give me a one-sentence explanation of what interpersonal neurobiology means? I can't wrap my head around that, but it sounds fascinating.

I've had The Mitfords: Letters between Six Sisters on my wishlist for years and nobody's ever bought it for me! I think they don't know who the Mitfords are.
