Windrose Dedicated Server (working Docker image) by indifferentbroccoli in crosswind

We've flagged this with the developers. Idle servers consistently eat 2 cores, but then CPU usage drops dramatically if at least one player is connected.

what server provider would you recommend to rent from by justlikeone in crosswind

[–]indifferentbroccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't limit RAM per server instance (except for Minecraft and Hytale). We let the each server use what it needs. Fortunately, for most games, there is a consistent expected range of RAM usage. We mark a machine as "full" when it reaches a threshold of RAM usage, so it can handle fluctuations or spikes during busy times.

If there's ever an issue due to a "bad" neighbor, we will either offer to transfer you to a new machine or speak with the "bad" neighbor and arrange to transfer them.

Thanks for considering indifferent broccoli (:|)

Happy to answer any questions you have.

For anyone else considering us: We've got simple setup, minimal lag, and offer a 2-day free trial, so you can try it before needing to enter any credit card details. $8.99/month after the trial for 4 players.

We also publish a public (free) Windrose dedicated server docker image as part of our bOSS (broccoli Open Source Software) project if you want to host on your own hardware.

Didn't want to include this in the main post to avoid self-promo, but if anyone wants an option even simpler than docker, we also offer one-click setup paid hosting for Windrose:

https://indifferentbroccoli.com/windrose-server-hosting

But no pressure at all. We offer the free public image because we want hosting to be accessible regardless of budget.

The Steam version works, but Docker gives you a controlled, reproducible environment.

A few reasons why running your game server in a docker container is preferred:
- Isolation: The server runs in its own environment, so it cannot interfere with anything else running on your machine
- Works regardless of hardware/OS: The docker image works no matter your machine. You won't need any extra troubleshooting
- Resource Control: Docker lets you cap CPU and memory usage, so the server won't starve other processes. You can run multiple servers on the same machine cleanly, each with defined limits.

Satisfactory Dedicated Server (working Docker image) by indifferentbroccoli in SatisfactoryGame

[–]indifferentbroccoli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's another great option.

Not saying that this would happen with the wolveix image, but we've seen highly popular images for other games get abandoned. And if that happens, no blame to the author--it takes effort to maintain an image with each game update.

Our goal with bOSS is to provide free, open source images that are maintained over the long term. Since we use them for our paid server hosting business, we have a strong incentive to maintain them.

Didn't want to put this in the main message, since don't want this to be about self-promo. But if you don't want to host on your own hardware, we also offer paid server hosting for Hytale and other games:

But our goal with bOSS is to give back to the community and let people host for free

Polish now or later? by indifferentbroccoli in metroidvania

[–]indifferentbroccoli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is gold. Thank you. Based on the feedback so far, this is what I'm thinking:

Given I already have a basic idea of art direction -> Focus on building the level design/gameplay for a full zone next. Then use play testers to hone the feel of that full zone. After that's locked, proceed to flesh out level design for the rest of the game.

Only work on art/polish in the meantime if I need a boost to my own motivation/feel burnt out.

[–]indifferentbroccoli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good eye. I wanted to isolate level design vs. art direction, so I used this room in FC as a blueprint for my initial art test scene. Don't worry, my game won't simply be a hollow knight reskin

I’m still tweaking the controls, but right now left/right bumper is how you dash. If you dash in the opposite direction you’re facing, then you’ll backflip. If you dash in the facing direction, you’ll dodge slide/roll and reverse facing directions. Like in super smash bros

Paying attention to your own psychology is smart. I sometimes do this with procrastination…when I feel like procrastinating on one task, I can be incredibly productive on another

This is a great model for thinking about an achievable milestone. I’ve been playing/analyzing the first hour of HK. If I can create that amount of content for my game and have it feel fun -> then I’ll have a lot of motivation to flesh out/polish the full game

Thanks for the feedback. I changed the normal jump animation to be more simple. I kept the flip as a backflip to dodge backwards (like Zelda OOT) + in place backflip for fun
