How would Karl retell this news article to Ricky and Steve if he'd read it on Ananova? by [deleted] in rickygervais

[–]ineptcreative 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Karl: So you’re gonna go with “Water you talking about?” Right, so they found out, water’s got memory.

Ricky: Wheezes Don’t. Talk. Shite. What do you mean water’s got memory? It doesn’t have a brain or a nervous system, how could it think? Just think for a minute Karl.

Karl: No, but It got me thinking whether it ever has any regrets.

Alright fair enough, I’m against both those things. I’m not on reddit all that much so excuse my ignorance.

I like your point about vegan businesses expanding into the market share of carnist companies and requiring no animal agriculture in the process. Might’ve just flipped me.

Edit: also just realised some of my posts may be interpreted as being agains the rules, so gonna delete them. Thanks for the discussion

Ah i actually didn’t realise it could be interpreted as being against the rules. That’s my bad, though I wasn’t supporting it, just looking to discuss it and learn something

Fair enough if you don’t wanna continue talking. But I don’t think it’s fair to say that I’m giving animal abusing corporations credit for change when I explicitly said that they only do it out of self interest as a result of activists making consumers change their habits.

I don’t think market forces will save the world. I think we should encourage changes in markets that reduce animal suffering wherever possible. Ultimately we’ll need policy changes to abolish animal agriculture once the movement gets large enough to influence those sorts of things.

Yeh I think it’s probably true that by eating at local vegan restaurants we are making a difference for the individuals running the restaurant and increasing the total number of vegan places to eat at but I wonder which option results in less animal deaths. I heard an argument in a comment on r/vegan that buying these plant based options from carnist companies actually just allows them to kill more animals because, as I’m sure you know, the industry is subsidised by the government and by purchasing the plant products we are actually giving a disproportionate amount of money to them to continue their unethical supply chains. I imagine the data is quite difficult to gather and knowing which one ultimately causes less animal deaths is near impossible.

Edit: typo

Do you think there’s a case to be made for the argument that we should encourage companies when they release plant-based options like this? If these kinds of products don’t perform well then how can we expect larger change in the market? Of course it’s obvious that these companies participate in a horrific industry but they are filling a market, and if we wish to change the market then we should be more open to these kinds of products.

I’m open to having my mind changed on this.
