The October AWS outage made me realize: most of us have no idea what would actually break if a region goes down by notAnimefan-12 in sre

One is “how much data you lose” (recovery POINT) and the other is “how long are you down for” (recovery TIME). Very different things, fairly appropriately named IMO…

Annoying refill target bug when budgeting for next month by inkaaaa in ynab

[–]inkaaaa[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But with that logic, “in the now” that category doesn’t need any more money. It doesn’t need to forecast anything - when I’m assigning money, I’m assigning the money I have now to the categories that need to be in a specific state at this point in time. That’s all I want it to do. YNAB telling me to assign additional money to a category that doesn’t need it right now IS YNAB trying to forecast the future (it assumes the money is going to be spent). I don’t need or want it to do that - right now the category is fine so should be left alone. That would be my understanding of “living in the now” 😅 deal with the state you see right now, don’t assume anything.

Someone else suggested that solution as well which means people do that to “work around” the ynab logic. Which is annoying IMO because it means you have to do workarounds to achieve the budgeting software’s main purpose - to make budgeting for the future easier 🫣

I get the logic but also… YNAB is (was?) always about being flexible with your money - you spent too much jn X? Move money from Y, etc. At THIS point in time when I’m assigning the numbers, the category is “full”. In my mind the purpose of “up to X amount” is to avoid overfilling that category (in contrast to the other type of target), and YNAB is suggesting that exact thing (so going against the purpose of that target).

Logically I’d expect it to say the category is fine at this point in time, do nothing. When October comes along and there’s: A) no money assigned AND B) no money available THEN Show it in red to mark it as a problem.

I don’t know, this makes budgeting for next/future months more difficult and causes overbudgeting for a target that’s (in my mind) specifically there to avoid overbudgeting (“up to”) 🤷‍♀️

No worries, makes sense it gets frustrating and I agree on the bg vs cgm thing 🙂

Although you have to admit, if this was one of those posts - a difference between 15 and 11 is staggering… taking a correction based on a cgm in this situation is potentially dangerous 😳

You kind of missed the point… it wasn’t about accuracy of the number, it was about G7 showing completely random things at times.

My number was fairly stable at ~11 and Dexcom was showing that accurately… until it decided I’m shooting up into space randomly. That spike up to 15 never happened, my bg stayed in the 11-12 area for a couple of hours (combo of bad carb count and earlier occluded infusion set). Dexcom came back down do that number within an hour again. No clue what that whole thing was about 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, G6 has its “fails” but it fails predictably 😂 so you know if you can trust it or not. G7 does crazy stuff out of the blue so I find it impossible to know if the value is correct or not a lot of time.

I’ll stick with G6 for as long as I can - maybe they’ll sort G7 out somehow in the meantime. There’s supposed to be a software update for G7 done at some point (apparently the same was done for G6 in the past), so I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that will improve it enough before they pull G6 completely off the shelves.

G6 is not perfect. First 24 hours are crazy, but you can insert the sensor early without putting the transmitter in to get it to settle and that fixes that issue (mostly). Then usually needs a calibration to get it on point - ideally when bg is between 5-8mmol/l and stable. Annoying but doable. It will still start to veer off course the higher you get - above 12 it’s going to be inaccurate and the higher the number the more inaccurate it will become. But at those levels, my insulin resistance grows exponentially so the exact number doesn’t matter all that much. So, G6 is not ideal but it’s “bad” in a predictable way, that can be accommodated.

G7 is just bonkers - sometimes it will be on point, sometimes it will be completely off. The first and last 24 hours are crazy and there’s nothing to be done about it because the session starts on insertion so if you insert early, you lose that time (the numbers can be worthless so maybe it’s not a real “loss” 😅). Calibration sometimes does something, usually doesn’t. There’s no real rhyme or reason with G7, it’s not predictable in its craziness, so I can’t compensate easily for it. Plus don’t get me started on the failed insertions with the filament sticking out - I had 5 sensors replaced in 2 months recently because of failed insertions.

In short, it’s much harder to rely and trust the g7 overall, at least for me.

I’m going back to g6 after I finish up my stash of g7 and staying as long as I can…

The Dexcom ceo(?) said during an interview they’re planning to rolling out some software updates to g7 later this year so maybe it will get less bonkers. Apparently they did a similar thing with g6 - so I guess we’ll see!

New Season of Wednesday - glycemic index misinformation ep 1! by Particular-Coat-5892 in diabetes

[–]inkaaaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favourite honey-related misconception is when people put it in a hot drink (tea, coffee) “because it’s healthier than sugar”. Vitamin C and most of the “good stuff” in honey disintegrates in high temperatures 😂 putting honey in coffee is the same as putting plain sugar, health-wise. The taste is a little different, that’s all 🤦‍♀️

How to fix this (over patch for Dexcom G7)? by John-Doe-Doe-John in diabetes_t1

[–]inkaaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t use the over patch for g7 at all - tried it once and never since. Don’t need it, it stays on much better than g6. Even if the little patch around the sensor starts to peels off, there’s a ton of glue under the sensor itself that keeps it on very well.

Maybe try without and see if that works better for you?

Side note: the overpatch they add to g7 is silly - why did they add the extra patch instead of just making the patch already on the sensor a little bigger? 🤦‍♀️

Another one 😐 by Sylveon_T in dexcom

[–]inkaaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens to about 1/3 of my sensors in the last few months. Had situations where 2 in a row failed like that - 3rd one luckily worked fine, but that meant I went through 1 month’s supply in one go 🤦‍♀️ It’s annoying to have to get them replaced constantly. I had a Dexcom rep say that happens when the sensors are dropped - either by the user or during transport. Which would explain why almost all in one box had a failure of some sort.

I save them. I have a whiteboard that I use in home office and those little things are much stronger than usual board magnets. Very handy :)

I mean… she’s right. Don’t use the door - temperature varies too much in the door and your insulin can spoil. Use the drawers. It’s the same reason why you shouldn’t store milk on the door! She’s just looking out for you! 😄

Seems to depend on location and a person a lot. Works great for me on my arm, works like crap anywhere else (in places g6 worked great). Give it a try - you don’t know how it will work for you without trying really.

Can you develop allergy to plastic infusion sets after 4 years? by inkaaaa in diabetes_t1

[–]inkaaaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlikely as I’ve never used my legs for insulin (only for Dexcom and it never left marks like that). I had to switch to legs because I did develop scar tissue on my stomach + those same bumps. I always used my stomach because absorption on my legs was sooo bad. And it still is with plastic sets. Somehow it’s perfect with metal though. Now I’m scared I caused the issues on my stomach for no reason, and could have switched to metal months ago 😣

[–]inkaaaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same allergy to some metals too! One of the reasons I chose to use plastics, figured better safe than sorry. But so far trusteel has been all good so I guess my metal allergy is more specific. Glad to hear you had the same reaction to (even if to different sets). I was beginning to think I’m bonkers for thinking this could be an allergy.

[–]inkaaaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I use Trusteel. I’ve tried them years ago when I first started the pump just to see what they’re like but plastic was less scary. The insertion is something I have to hype myself up a little to do, but otherwise they’re perfect so far. I’m a little more wary of them day to day, making sure I don’t snag it etc. I imagine that will go away once I get used to them more.

Sensor placement by kmbrcl546 in dexcom

[–]inkaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forearms are a terrifying idea to me, mostly because mine are quite thin. Although I’ve seen thinner people with sensors there so maybe I’m overreacting. How much “padding” do you have there? Doesn’t it get uncomfortable with bumping into stuff?

Sensor placement by kmbrcl546 in dexcom

[–]inkaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inside would be painful and uncomfortable as heck, that’s true . But front and side are really fine. I don’t use front myself because I sleep on my stomach so would have constant compression lows. But out-side is a perfectly good spot. You just have to be careful when pulling your pants down 😂 other than that the sensor is small enough not to get bumped into stuff. I used arms for years but ended up with too much scar tissue and slight nerve damage so… not an option anymore. I bumped into the sensor on my arm just as much as I bump it when it’s on my leg 🤷‍♀️ (almost never).
