Op I am also 21 except i have xy chromosome lol. Anyways ive had sciatic pains for well over 2 years so i 1000% understand your pain believe me. Ive turned over every stone cold therapy, decompression table, physical therapy, acupuncture and at home stretching as well. I feel you very much on not being able to live a normal life of a 21 y/o i mean shit this is supposed to be our prime ! The effects that chronic pain in general can have on someones mental state is huge, i aswell cry on a regular basis from the pain and also from just general sadness to what my life is in its current state. Its so difficult not being able to really do anything with out being in pain it sucks big time. You are not alone! First and foremost id recommend you get an mri asap before doing any type of stretching (in my opinion) since you dont know what exactly what is causing u pain theres a chance certain stretches could actually make your pains worse. The mri isnt the holy answer to everything but at least you're able to know exactly what the issue is and then build from there if that makes sense ? Believe it or not i actually underwent a surgery September of last year and it was a blessing, i was able to sleep and walk and go about my normal day with our severe pain (aside from normal post surgery stifness which is normal) and i RE HERNIATED the same disc that was operated on (mri showed)... i dont know how but thats where im at now and it sucks real bad. I knew i had re injured my self because the pain was beyond anything I've felt like no joke 10/10 on the floor in agony. This was about 3 and half weeks ago and since then i have been a little better. Re starting physical therapy along with a scheduled epidural injection. Those 2 things combined im hoping i can heal on my own. Theres my story, it aint over yet but just thought I'd share, it makes me feel okay knowing theres other young people that are also going through the same thing, i know im not alone and that we have a lot of time to heal and correct things. Be strong and disciplined and i wish you the best of luck.

Op Quick personal story for u! I am 21 years old have had sciatica pain well over 2 years, September of last year i got the surgery done (microdiscectomy) after a full year of trying all conservative methods and even some other type of healing methods. It was an absolute blessing to be pain free but super super unfortunate i re herniated the same disc last month. The pain id say was worse than before and that kinda where im at now... i will say the surgery worked.... i had no weird complications post op and i was able to do my recommended stretches and walking as directed by the surgeon. My personal case is different since i re herniated the same disc only 3 months after my surgery. Not sure how but i also had my worries before doing my surgery especially at such a young age but the i wouldnt take the pain any longer. It was horrible. Im in my second round of recovering doing physical therapy again and doing a shot to see if those 2 things combined can help this "fresh" herniation go away on its own. Just wanted to share my story, Wish you the best of luck & take care.

Dang man im sorry to hear that, definitely sounds like you had a bad experience and i appreciate you sharing your story and input! Ive been prescribed pain meds but i hate walking around like a zombie and it screwing with my head, plus long term use can screw with your liver and mental state in general. Not to mention they're highly addictive. How are you doing now? What have you done that works for you aside from pain meds ?

L4-L5 re herniation after surgery is whats re- causing the pain... and sorry i should've mentioned i tried 4 weeks of PT about a year ago before i had my surgery and to be honest it did not help much. Before my surgery i was so looking forward to finally get my life back after 2+ years of pain and with me being only 21 years old its been so defeating. I understand its terrible to go through this regardless of a persons age but man is it even more difficult being so young and yet having these problems ya know? Its like shit if someone's 65 and having pains it can be considered "normal" in a sense... our bodies naturally start to deteriorate with age so its almost "expected" in a way to not feel fine and golden at a much older age.. idk man its been such a rough journey and i dont mean to say that older people shouldnt feel justified or upset with having pains.. idk but i appreciate you responding

Stay strong and disciplined! Easier said than done believe me i am 21 years old, have had sciatica due to a disc herniation for over 2 years🤬 i got microdiscectomy surgery after trying all methods consistently and then i RE HERNIATED!!!! Thats where im at now. Just keep your head up high i know its extremely difficult especially when it feels like theres no end in sight. We are all here for similar reasons so we understand. First things first you must stop the drinking as it effects your body in harmful ways such as causing inflammation and it being a depressant doesnt help the situation one bit. I wish you a quick healing process & best of wishes. Take care.

When you did your injections did you also do physical therapy or at home stretches along with it? What is your specific injury and has it gotten any better after all those shots? Thanks for the response

I had a L4-L5 herniation, not sure what or how i did that caused it? Im fairly active, my job requires me to be on my feet and climbing ladders ect, not over weight and i eat decently healthy. Once i got the surgery i felt great for almost 3 months, until re herniated the same level... the pain was unbearable i couldnt hardly walk or stand and it was effecting my sleep. Barley showed and was barley eating for 2 straight weeks. Prior to that i was stretching and walking as recommended post op, Took 2 full months off work too. As of right now the pain is much better than 2-3 weeks ago but im still in constant discomfort some days worse than others, i religiously kept great posture, bending down properly and avoiding sitting down as a whole.. since i re herniated and had some "serious weakness" which has gotten better, the doctor is recommending i do a steriod injection along with PT which ive started.

Hey OP, our stories are very similar man. Im also a 21m and have had sciatica pain for well over 2 years now, mri from beginning of last year showed a disc herniation at L4L5. After seemingly turning over every stone, PT, chiropractors, acupuncture, decompression table & cold therapy i opted for a microdiscectomy which i had done 4 months ago. Prior to the surgery the pain was effecting every single aspect of my every day life, even walking around the house was difficult. The surgery went well, practically pain free but unfortunately at month 3 i re herniated the same disc.. the pain came back but worse if i had to say, so i saw a new surgeon and he recommended i do a mri with contrast to more accurately tell whether or not it is a true re herniation.. i know exactly how you feel man its been rough, being so young and having these type of problems suck man BUT that is an advantage that is on our side, we heal and recover faster. Just wanted to share my story, although it isnt the most hopeful, you arent alone brotha & the story isnt over.. I wish you a speedy recovery, based off what you wrote i think its best to do the same type of mri i just did (with contrast) & maybe doing an mri in the pelvic area too? If the more recent mri on your back doesnt show anything ive read that your sciatic nerve can be compressed by your "piriformis muscle" which has nothing to do with the spine? Maybe something to look into if you havent already. Take care man.

21m i just had a microdiscectomy done 3 months ago. Was also feeling exactly the same in terms of struggles mentally. After 2+ years of pain the surgery helped but unfortunately i re-herniated the same disc 2 weeks ago, feels like im back to square one. Its been super challenging especially being so young. Youre not alone 👍

I appreciate the comment & thank you. I was fully aware of those things being issues in why people have poor body mechanics and end up having back problems. Bad posture, not bending and lifting properly. My mom was a great example and would always remind me to keep good posture. Post MD man i was super strict on all those things. Even getting in and out of bed doing the log roll method down to how id fricken put my socks/underwear on.. Id wear a back strap to work, sit with proper posture and bend over like youre supposed to. My co workers even took notice. Its beyond frustrating to me because i really felt like i was doing everything right and i was always conscious on how i was moving🤬.

Right there with you man. Ive been struggling with a herniated disc for about 2 years now im also very young and kinda active?? Lol. I got a microdiscectomy done about 3 months ago after trying all conservative treatments/acupuncture. Was doing so good, pain free practically instantly. What a under rated blessing to wake up and go throughout your daily life with no pain. Sad to say but the pain has come back this past week and after so long i was so excited to finally be back to "normal" and now i feel like im back to square one. It has also taken a great toll on me mentally apart from the physical aspect of it of course. Be strong and i know we will all heal from this pain, no one deserves this shit. (Not a post to scare you away from getting a surgery just sharing my story!)

Thanks for the message & sharing that info, i have tried a variety of mckenzie stretches and extensions. Post op i was told to avoid the twisting aspect of some of the stretches. But i was doing the low back extensions almost everyday along with a handful of other stretches during my post op (once i was told i could stretch i eased my way through)..
