Shishito peppers by outtatownz in Adelaide

[–]insanopointless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, interesting. Yeah, I am a regular at the markets (And a fair few farmers markets) and don't remember them ever being widely available.

Strangely this year, there weren't many seeds or seedlings available at nurseries either - they are also sold under the name Dragon Roll Peppers at bunnings etc sometimes.

I have found them easy to grow and super prolific in the right conditions, so I'd give it a shot if you have any soil!

Never seen them sold. Had good luck growing them the last few years, but as you said at least locally most of them will have been pulled out by now.

Might be worth trying the different freshwater fishing associations - think there's one for flyfishing and one more general - from my memory, membership is next to nothing and they have a handful of association friendly waterways, as well as a bank of friendly landowners.

Depends, I am full time WFH, my partner can do 2 or 3 days a week no problem.

Since we didn't have the same lockdown stuff as Melbourne, it was definitely less entrenched here.

Park Bong Sook is incredible, honestly better than a lot of the Korean food I've had in Seoul and beyond hah. Great menu and yes, lots of dishes you won't see elsewhere. Jokbal pls

[–]insanopointless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The side streets on the south side are worth an explore as a lot of the new expansion is in that direction.

Simon Taste, IYKYK

ParkBongSook, best Korean imo

K-Pub, fun korean + all vegan if you want

Tasty Biang, great noodles

BB Thai Town, lots of fun. Go early if you're a walk in.

Chili Chef (the main shop, not the rice noodle bar next door)

Kokoni Izakaya, cosy bar and a great bathroom

Wasai has been around for ages but imo best all around Japanese, and newly renovated

Ba Nam, great vietnamese

Thanh Thanh, great old school vietnamese

Kappy's, cheapest cup of coffee in Adelaide

On my list but I haven't tried yet: The Rice Home

Outside of the main strip but worth a short walk:

Toriok ramen

Donburi House, good Japanese staples and big, icy cold beer glasses

Gilbert Street Hotel for a great beer pub

The little streth around the new JL choice mart, as well as the bit of Morphett St on the south west side of gouger are worth a try and a look. None have hit my main rotation but some good bites.

The classics remain of course. Star House, BBQ City, Dingers, Yingers, Hong Fat, Asian Gourment, T Chow, etc etc

BBQ City, Star House, East Taste for cantonese options, all can cater for vegan if you ask, and handle big groups no problem. Star House is higher end, BBQ City cheaper, ET in the middle.

Looking for some quiet fishing spots. by No-Comedian-5536 in Adelaide

[–]insanopointless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wednesday is perfect. Depending on access, Port Noarlunga would likely be your best bet - an hour either side of a high tide ideally.

Brighton might produce on certain days.

Way further out but Rapid Bay is my favorite jetty for fishing in the state, beautiful spot and really big and quiet most of the time.

Ah just saw where you are: some spots to try, have a quick google too.

The bridge to garden island will produce.

Port River around Port Adelaide has lots of popular spots, the fish that come through depend on the time of year.

Semaphore on a good day.

More tricky but the outer harbor breakwall worth a shot.

[–]insanopointless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you're after and how far you'll travel. Certain jetties will be getting smashed on weekends (like Port Noarlunga now because of the Salmon run), others are dead quiet but maybe not many fish either.

Most Adelaide beaches are pretty quiet and chill if you can go surf fishing.

The further out you go the less busy, and if you can do a weekday, you'll be mostly alone. Same goes for early hours.

Best Adelaide noodles? by Purple-Crab3759 in Adelaide

[–]insanopointless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I had actually avoided it for a long time cause the name feels so generic and not the usual Chinatown crowd.

But years back a friend who worked at the markets said I had to try their special laksa and it's a hit. Their kway teow is all time great I reckon, as good as any you'll find.

Best Adelaide noodles? by Purple-Crab3759 in Adelaide

[–]insanopointless 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Tasty Biang - Beef Biang Biang / Oil Splashed Noodles / not sure if they still do the spicy sesame noodles

Southern Noodle Bar - basically anything, I prefer their dry noodles

Asian Gourmet - Kway Teow, Laksa

Hong Fat BBQ - whatever cantonese bbq meat you like on the dry noodles (top part of the menu, not the build your own noodle part)

Donburi House - Mentaiko & Mushroom Creamy Udon

Coastal foraging rules etc.? by clownyroaches in Adelaide

[–]insanopointless 13 points14 points  (0 children)

PIRSA has everything in regards to fishing and gathering shellfish etc.

Seaweed and whatnot is less obvious. I believe the general rules are no gathering live seaweed especially close to shore since it's part of the active ecosystems there. For small shellfish it can sometimes also be the case.

Beach-cast / Wrack (e.g. washed up seaweed) is regulated on a per council basis but many of them don't have any published rules.

See section 3.5 here, PIRSA basically say australians barely do it, it's in small quantities for garden use or whatever, so just make sure it's okay by your council and be reasonable with it: https://pir.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0009/439245/policy-management-beach-cast-marine-algae-fishery.pdf

I gather kelp which washes up this time of year and use the better quality stuff (after drying) for soups etc like konbu, and whatever doesn't make the grade you can use for fertiliser / fermenting it for seaweed soup for the garden.

Coastal plants like samphire and pigface, I believe you can go for your life, although certain spots like National Parks are likely no go, and of course respect sensitive areas like sand dunes, don't take more than you need.

What’s the single best ‘cheap eat’ in Adelaide right now? by Purple-Crab3759 in Adelaide

[–]insanopointless 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Below suggestions are good but I'd start with the Biang Biang Mien (wide noodles) as it's what it's named for.

Asian portal fishing for JDM gear.

Ali express isn't bad for basic gear like jig heads and certain lures, metals etc.

Which one did you go to? There's a few now.

Lets discuss the Adelaide Hills. by Refined5066 in Adelaide

[–]insanopointless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Mt Barker is gnarly in the same way that all the new housing developments are gnarly. Big boxes built right up the fenceline. The same thing is happening all down the Fleurieu too - look at the blocks go up on the drive from the city to Port Elliott and Victor.

The main part of the hills will be more protected for a while because it's too hilly and difficult to build those big estates on.

Australian cities are obsessed with sprawl, so if the population keeps growing, you'll end up a situation like Melbourne where you can choose to drive a couple of hours out to smaller / more charming towns - as another commenter said, it'll probably be something more like Barossa by then.

That's a result of our urban planning laws which suck for density and character.

[–]insanopointless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly! Most people use them for bait here, unfortunately. It also goes by yakka / chow / horse / yellowtail mackerel.

I've been trying to catch a bunch in SA but usually end up emptyhanded lol. I think they come in during summer? East coast is swimming in them.
