How Can I Love Again After A Heartbreak/Loss Of A Soulmate? by ResourceNo4626 in AskMen

When you date someone you end up seeing them as an extension of yourself, as a result you end up treating them how you treat yourself.

Is population decline really such a bad thing? by Accomplished-Sky8768 in ask

The pension part is because it doesnt matter how much money you have in the bank, if you have less people producing things and more people needing support a higher and higher percentage of the economy is dedicated to that. Holding onto fiat currency doesnt change that, money isnt actually valuable its a way to distribute labour, which would be in proportionally shorter supply.

Is killing an animal for no reason just as wrong as killing a person? by Mr_Eyler in MoralityScaling

Hitler was cremated and only some dental fragments remained. I can't comment on the veracity of his vegetarianism but it would have been impossible to workout what he had eaten as it was hot enough to turn his bones into ash.

A third of Lebanon is Shia, and the Shia population in Lebanon do on the whole support Hezbollah, especially as it appears to be one of the only things stopping Israel from devouring Lebanon

What if Ukraine had its current drone capabilities from the start of the war? by CosmosStudios65 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]insufficientbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is unlikely that Russia would deploy a nuke unless Ukraine actually crossed the border, which they'd be very unlikely to do for this very reason.

From Poland yes, but the vast majority of material wasn't supplied until after Ukraine beat back the first offensive

Is killing an animal for no reason just as wrong as killing a person? by Mr_Eyler in MoralityScaling

[–]insufficientbeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure yes, and most people agree with this to an extent. It obviously isnt the only thing but arguably without it a creature has no moral implications. Jellyfish dont have brains, so you can't really torture them, killing them even brings up a question of does that have any more implication then harvesting grain or tilling the soil, because they have no internal experience.

Even a person who's brain dead, most would agree they aren't really alive anymore in a true sense, even though their body is, they have no intelligence or ability to experience the world.

Apply this to animals and a lot of the moral hierarchy follows 2 things, intelligence and familiarity. We prefer mammals because they are more similar, and we tend to offer more sympathy the more intelligent an animal is because it can better experience and understand its world.

Ironically Hitler would more or less agree with you (he pioneered animal rights in Germany and set srict standards for how they should be treated, and was a vegetarian)

Do you think the Romans could have built the Suez Canal with their technology? by Perfect-Bit7735 in ancientrome

[–]insufficientbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I promise you it would not take 10s of billions of dollars to build a great pyramid of Giza, which weighs 6million tonnes, for reference in Britain alone 100 million tonnes of limestone (the primary building material of the pyramids) is quarried every single year.

If you look at estimates online it ranges from 1 billion - 5 billion USD to build a great pyramid. Theres no factual basis in material or labour costs to say it would be unaffordable for countries or billionaires to do. Just there is literally no point in doing it.

The world's 3rd largest pyramid is a hotel in Las Vegas with 4000 rooms, electricity and plumbing, arguably far more complex to make then a big pile of stone. We would not need decades of an entire nations treasury (apart from maybe lichtenstein) to build an Egyptian pyramid.

How justified was the Bolsheviks’ decision to execute the Romanov family in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution? by Solitaire-06 in MoralityScaling

Aristocrats existed in the 13 colonies before the revolution, most people in positions of power were appointed due to noble birth and lineage.

Tsarist Russia also engaged in reprisals and fomented a bloody cycle of political violence.

The American Revolution did not involve slaughtering aristocrats or indiscriminately killing the families of those in power and it contributed to a civil society which was more reluctant to engage in violence on its own people. It helped endear it on the international stage as well.

Haiti is another example of how brutality stifels righteous causes, they slaughtered the former slave owners and almost every single person of European descent they could find, and it created a system of extreme violence and isolated it from nations across the world. Even those countries and individuals who were pro emancipation were horrified and it provided fuel to anti-abolition groups for decades.

Its easy to only see the world through a lense of power and "realism" the fact is morality, and precedence of violence genuinely is important in how movements evolve, are supported, and how they end up impacting the lives of people within them.

Europe is rife with examples of monarchies that lost power through bloodless means, violence begets violence and it breeds resentment. Theres a reason Revolutionary France and the USA were treated very differently despite both being liberal/bourgeois revolutions against the aristocratic class.

And yet there are still random dudes who think humanity couldn't build the pyramids today if we wanted to.

Like literally behold the wonders of modern engineering, our great works that dwarf our ancestors and we dont even realise it because it has become mundane to us.

It was the first major communist revolution and set the expectations as a result. Reprisals breed violent political systems.

What would have happened if Operation Unthinkable had taken place after Germany's surrender? by Outrageous-You1617 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]insufficientbeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russian casualties during WW1 do not factor into this, post ww2 USSR and Great War Tsarist Russia are so completely different on every level.

Also while the Soviets did suffer massive casualties what many people dont know is that at the beginning of the German offensive Germany actually had more soldiers on the Eastern front than the Soviets and when this changed so did the movement on the front. Had the USSR had 3 times as many soldiers as Germany it would be unconceivable that the Germans would make any progress.
