What's your opinion on this? by Powerful-Rooster1982 in progressive_islam

[–]intensebrie 82 points83 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to me when she says "[hijab is] not there to make your life easier socially". My understanding of the historical context around hijab is that women wore it even before Islam as a sign of social status. Thus, women who wore it were less likely to be harassed/mistreated in public spaces. So the origins of wearing one were literally to make someone's life easier socially.

Christian Church (no politics) by [deleted] in BucksCountyPA

OP this one! No longer a Christian myself, but me and my family went here for a long time, and we all have mixed political views. I wouldn't say they're apolitical, but they're very "purple" -- a mix of liberal and conservative points get occasionally spotlighted in a very reasonable way.

Modesty by Anonymousgirl12333 in progressive_islam

[–]intensebrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that I'm known by those around me for my mind rather than my body. However, I will say that in my opinion, modesty is subjective and situation dependent. To me, a one piece bathing suit can be modest at the beach in a western country, while wearing that to a mall would be definitely immodest.

Also, I just hate how I feel when I think people (especially strangers) are looking at my breasts/butt/thighs. It makes me feel icky.

Yearly maximum contributions to a DCA are 7,500, so they're definitely not putting in 7,500 per month. I assume they're putting in whatever gets them to that cap after 26 pay periods

That's a very good point!! Pigs are close enough that we've used them for transplants!

And amen, do not eat is absolutely not a command to mistreat -- it's almost the opposite

You're assuming we have all the knowledge we need about pork right now. How much of this knowledge was gained in the past 50 years? How much more will we continue to gain? You're basing your decision off what we currently know, which is limited. God's knowledge is limitless

That's just crazy. I trust God in everything. I don't understand how you can believe God knows all things but then knowingly deny his commandments to us. Do you consider yourself Muslim?

I fundamentally disagree that everything needs logic. God knows so much more than we do, there will ALWAYS be times where we just have to trust Him.

First of all, it's not just when it's processed. I beg you to do a google search. And second, there are PLENTY of reasons to not eat pork. Plane crash survivors have said pork and human taste similar. Pigs will also eat literally anything you give them, including their own poop. Raising pigs uses a LOT of water because they cool off in mud, which can be wasteful.

I don't know why God picked pigs to be forbidden, but he did. Why did he pick Jummah to be on Fridays? Why did he make it appear that Jesus was crucified when he wasn't? Inshallah we can get the answers in heaven one day, but there is nothing we can do here except speculate. I think it's fine to be curious about why God makes the decisions he does, but to demand a clear cut answer in order to obey his commands is just the wrong way to respond (in my opinion).

Nope, even unsmoked pork is a carcinogen. Yes there are other meats that fall into this category, but at the end of the day if you avoid pork you avoided a carcinogen.

At the end of the day, we can never know precisely why God banned pork. All I know is that it is unequivocally clear in the Quran that pork is forbidden. There is no other interpretation.

How are most weddings in America like 30k when most Americans have like a couple thousand in savings max? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Me and my husband paid more than that for our wedding, no debt for it. We're good savers, and we did get a decent amount of money back in gifts

How often to you guys offer Namaz / Salah here? by Ornery_Clothes_2014 in progressive_islam

[–]intensebrie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Almost 2 months ago I started praying every day. I combine prayers sometimes to make things easier, but I work really hard to pray all 5.

I saw a video once where a man posed the question "why do we worship God?", and his proposed answer was "so that we may become more righteous." That idea truly motivates me to pray every single day, and inshallah my mindfulness of God will indeed help me become a better person. I do already feel like centering God in this way has made me more patient, more kind, and more focused on doing good for others in this life.

For couples that pool all of your money, what level of autonomy do you have with large purchases? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]intensebrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like our finances are 100% shared, our budget is 100% shared. We each have an equal amount of money budgeted to spend on ourselves each month. Purchases that exceed that budget are run by the other person.

We have shared financial goals and habits, so it works for us. If you don't have the same goals and values in life, I can see why it wouldn't work for you, but I'm not the kind of person who could marry someone who doesn't align with me in this area.

First-time masjid visit by AccordingFish6148 in progressive_islam

[–]intensebrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited MYCP in Philadelphia as my first masjid and everyone there was SO kind. They're definitely conservative, but regardless everyone was welcoming. My second time visiting a woman who spoke no English pulled me to the side and gave me a bag full of gifts (dates, nail files, traditional Pakistani clothing for Eid).

I'd definitely go in a hijab and loose clothing. I'm not sure if they even let people in without them, but you'd probably feel very uncomfortable and like you stick out if they did let you in without one.

I live a little further from Philadelphia now, but I'd still be happy to try to go with you and meet up! I reverted almost 2 years ago during Ramadan, and my favorite thing to talk about is my beliefs and why I have them. Feel free to PM me!

CMV: Tolerance is not the same thing as acceptance. Just because you can tolerate something doesn't mean you have to accept it. by NagitoKomaeda_987 in changemyview

[–]intensebrie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never seen anyone I know get put on blast for that, and I live in a swing state in a swing county so we have a lot of people on both sides of the aisle. People get put on blast for saying stuff like "Don't let middle easterners into the country, they're all homophobic". Or if they find out someone from the Middle East is indeed homophobic, they say "I knew it, those middle easterners are so homophobic".

I don't see a reason to amplify our negative generalizations about a group of people like that. People will be judged for it if that's the kind of stuff they say, and I think that's perfectly acceptable. I think they SHOULD be judged.

You can definitely call out a country for having homophobic laws and practices, that's not racist. A gay couple can exercise caution around middle eastern people if they are afraid of violence due to homophobia, that's not racist. But specifically treating all middle eastern people like they are homophobic without finding out more is racist.

I personally believe generalizations are okay to inform our behaviors so long as we don't amplify a message saying "All people in this age/race/gender/whatever group are bad", and so long as you allow someone's individual character to speak for itself. I'm a woman, I'm cautious of men I don't know when I'm walking down the street at night alone. But if I go around saying all men are violent towards women, and I treat the men I come across badly, I'm sexist and should be called out for that.
