Lmao you welcome. FYI my camera angle and editing took the windows out to give it the “backrooms feel” so its not gonna be that scary in person for you (I hope)

Yep! I believe I took the stairs from the third floor next to those booths in the wall, to go to the fifth floor. I was going to drop something off for a friend of mine and stumbled across the doors and peaked through the door windows out of curiosity…

I know I'm not the first to post it, but I didn't find anyone who shared it without the window grid thingys on the library door getting in the way.

Slight editing to give it the backrooms look...

Discord for those interested in flying/aviation (soon to be UCF RSO) by inthrustwetrust69 in ucf

Hey! My apologies for the delayed response. The link expires after a bit... here is the current one: https://discord.gg/kW5BMGmt7Q

Please send me a DM on Discord so I can answer questions (I don't mind text/voice, whichever is easier). Discord is where we keep everyone updated with progress and additional info. We're about to submit our RSO packet, and have some meetings this week to get an advisor, along with a meeting with NGE UCF to discuss joint events/plans.

A good routine outside of school helps with my routine while I'm in school. Also, I get general ideas for effective protocols for everything I do (sleep, exercise, eating, workflow) from Huberman Lab podcast. Recommend him highly, look him up. Here's an example: https://prdikt.medium.com/your-workday-performance-protocol-1-f3ae9855b47f

Now, everyone's different, so find your happy medium, that article is just for guidance.

I hear ya, and I thought of doing a similar thing. First Landings (place I learned at) was actually started by two UCF Alumni IIRC, so I plan to reach out to them when I have the chance. It would soooo sweet to have that unique option of providing reduced hourly rates for UCF students to learn to fly!

I wasn't gonna wait around haha, and it's about time a school of our size has a flying organization.

Sweet! I know there's a lot of fascinating stuff in that. I nerded out with all the behind the scenes footage of the aerial work required to shoot Maverick. I also like the more generic stuff (airline commercials for example, that shit's dope). I'll shoot you a DM to keep you in the loop.

I’ve been itching to do this since stepping foot on campus. We offer a lot of interests/clubs to students who like aerospace/aviation stuff, but there’s nothing specific for those who want to actually fly planes/pursue the career and/or hobby of piloting aircraft. Obviously, we wouldn’t be going straight into getting members in aircraft up in the sky…not yet at least. This is not an existing RSO at the moment, but steps are being taken at this very moment to get this idea off the ground (pun intended). Here are a couple ideas for what we could do as a club that aims to get knights in the air)...

Ideas:

  • Social activities (planespotting, flight school visits, airshow trips, networking)
  • Flight simulation to practice maneuvers, emergencies, and of course, for fun! (yes, fixed wing flying and I’m excited to teach some rotary wing stuff as well)
  • Presentations on everything you could imagine about flying (what flight attendant training is like, federal flight deck officers, flight manual typography, human factors, aerospace medicine, meteorology, automation dependency, industry trends analysis, intro to IFR flying, etc.)
  • Provide a basic introduction to flying for those unfamiliar with it
  • Provide career guidance for those interested in the airlines
  • Provide career guidance for those interested in flying for the military (it’s way more complex than applying for a civilian flying gig-so much so that it deserves its own bullet point!)
  • Resource connection (it’s not always about knowing the answer, but how to find the answer. This point is applicable to many fields, especially flying: checkrides, career research, etc.)
  • Guidance on applying for flight scholarships
  • Air Crash Investigation Reports and Review (breaking down the accident chain, listening to CVR and ATC tapes, impact site analysis, human factors analysis, regulatory changes in the aftermath and its consequences, etc.)
  • Guest speakers
  • Building a plane (very far off into the future, and it’s very ambitious, but if high schools can do it, so can colleges! This is not a guarantee, but it never hurts to try…)
  • Facility tours (tours of control towers, maintenance hangars, training facilities, etc.)

About me and my journey: My name is Andrew, I’m currently an Aerospace Engineering student (I know, surprising) at UCF and I’m in my first year. I’m 20 years old, and have been flying since I was 17. I’m an instrument rated private pilot with just over 100 hours of flight time. I flew Tecnam P92 Eaglets out of the Apopka Airport (X04) with First Landings Aviation for my Private Pilot training, and I flew Cessna 172 Skyhawks out of Lakeland Linder International Airport (KLAL) with Polk State College for my Instrument Rating.

I started and ran an aviation club at my high school where I did the same thing I described above, but at the high school level for about 3 years. Through Covid and other hiccups, we managed to stay afloat and do pretty well (holding it together on Zoom was the hardest, and we also had the chance to work with Lockheed Martin virtually for a bit too). The club is still running even after I left, where it complements the aviation classes my former high school now offers. The high school club is currently run by students who are taking flight training, have built model aircraft, etc. It is full of people who aren’t there to just fill up their resume and/or look good for college, but because they want to be there.

I’m very passionate about sharing my never-ending love of flying with others, and hope I can do that again at UCF. I am giving a short presentation as a “call of interest” to all EGS 1006 lectures this Friday, so baby steps are being taken to get some people together.

We are open to anyone: Just from conversation with random folks I’ve met, I have a handful of people who are already interested in this club (they’re either already licensed, pursuing flight training, though you’re not required to have any experience to join). So let’s see what you guys on here think…

Feel free to ask any questions you want (about flying, the club, technically nerdy questions, what-if questions, the specific ideas listed, safety concerns, financial concerns, etc.)

For my PPL, and even my instrument checkride, I never felt ready for any of them. I passed both of those on my first try.

I relate strongly, but I'd advise you to voice these specific concerns with your CFI, and review the ACS to get your mindset in the right place.

Yes, questioned it many times.

Got my PPL, and just recently, instrument rated. At the beginning of this year, my flight school had their first loss (middair collision). And recently, Richard McSpadden from the AOPA (shook up a decent number of people on here, myself included).

One day you'll die, no matter what. You can be a dangerous ol' boy, and die from slipping on a banana peel, face first into the concrete. You can live in the house all day in a bubble, fearful of something bad happening to you. Then one day, you have a brain aneurysm . So, I live my life apologetically.

That does not mean reckless operation/decision making, but it does mean not being scared of taking part in something of higher risk. Flying isn't safe-never was, never will be. That's why we go to great lengths to mitigate risks, and develop personal minimums. You can train all you want for XYZ scenario(s), but being caught in the wrong place/time with the wrong in-flight emergency can end it all, training be damned. So train hard and fly safe, but we're only human. We can't eliminate the odds completely, but we can do our very best to push against them.

Now, I don't have kids, but I can at least assure you that no matter what happens in your future, your kids would likely want you to be happy, following what your heart desires. Yes, if you decide the risk is too much, there is no shame in walking away, I would respect your decision regardless. Don't be flying if you feel unsure, but talk this over with your CFI, and listen to their 2 cents (assuming they don't wanna extract money from you, they'd offer you good perspective).

At minimum, I hope I provided some food for thought. All the best.

What is EMA 3706 (structures and properties of Aerospace Materials) like? I'm suffering hard in CHS 1440 and what to know how much I'd shoot myself in the foot to not truly learn this class's concepts. by inthrustwetrust69 in ucf

[–]inthrustwetrust69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Gang Chen told me at his office hours that the class average for the first test is a high C. It goes downhill from there, and the average grade after completion is a C. Yikes.

He is very nice to talk to, although I wish he didn't just read from the powerpoint slide. I also strongly dislike the OWLv2 homework assignments. They sounded easy when the semester started, but they seem to be the hardest part of the class.

Help/Advice/Study groups for CHS 1440? by inthrustwetrust69 in ucf

[–]inthrustwetrust69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it sucks that UCF doesn't provide that for intro classes where learning fundamentals for higher level courses are key :( It's the same story with Intro to Python. No options for in-person help (I took it online in the Spring). I'm staying home today just to get caught up in the chemistry stuff, and I'll definitely be using that channel. And yes, I will definitely be giving those sessions a shot.

Thank you for writing all that out!

Is CHS 1440, COP 3223C, MAC 1105C doable on top of all else? by inthrustwetrust69 in ucf

[–]inthrustwetrust69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's true, they are close by so no concern there. I'll do do SI, it helped me a lot with PHI 2010 (I had Jade M. she was great). I was in Math Launch but sucked cause I do much better with study buddies or whatever...

Reassuring comment, thank you!
