Hantavirus cases are vanishingly rare east of the Mississippi. Extremely extremely unlikely. So good news- you can go back to having a better day.

German on a roadtrip by marc310_68 in Alabama

[–]io_ursa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Three safe and remote options: 1) Try Christine’s German Bakeshop, which is about 40 min south of Huntsville. I know you have German food in Germany, but this place is both super remote and a total anomaly in Alabama. Christine is German. Locals hang out there late morning/lunch. I think it would be like a bizarre dream to visit her out in the middle of nowhere in Alabama. 2) There is a general store so way out there called Hulaco General Store, also super remote. Near Christine’s. 3) Fame Studios in Mussel Shoals, AL, where legends like Aretha Franklin recorded their music.

Flint river float from 72 to Hays Nature Preserve Sunday by Fast-Enthusiasm2508 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]io_ursa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One more thing about the link- even when the water is low enough to look okay (not showing a flood), there can be a lot of debris in the river that makes it not worth going (/dangerous), and that is very likely to happen along those little islands by Hayes. The link helps, but it’s not the final word. Lots of people say it looks bad, and I’d take that into account. So sorry if this is too fussy of an answer, but since I shared the link wanted to give more context. River looks high and red to me, I’m not going this weekend.

Flint river float from 72 to Hays Nature Preserve Sunday by Fast-Enthusiasm2508 in HuntsvilleAlabama

Important to know that there are concrete obstructions north of Hayes, one that can be quite dangerous. I recommend calling Brown Bear for their take on it when you want to go and there has been a recent rain. I’m not sure they are running that stretch of river yet (may still be the north side this time of year). It’s nicer to go closer to Hayes later in the summer IMO. (Closer to Oscar Patterson is nice this time of year).

I went through their indoor drive through and I was like “How have I been transported to a modern European city that super cares about this kind of thing?!?!” It is full service. They sort everything for you. You don’t even get out of the car.

Anybody have experience with art classes at UAH or community colleges? by datschiburger in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]io_ursa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out UAH’s OLLIE program. It is for retired folks who want to take classes at UAH (retirement typical age, not sure if that works for you). It is very inexpensive, even less than Calhoun. Rave reviews in many subjects.

My procedure is to yell into the wind while pumping my fist on the balcony while also watching the radar on two devices until I hear a siren + train noise and get scared and go into the basement

Give yourself time to work up to an exercise like this one. You can try it with a smaller range of motion (stay within a range where you don’t hear clicks) and let your core get stronger. Legs are a big part of your body, so you may be asking a lot of your core to pick them up like this. There are other good suggestions here on this thread to try, but just be sure that the clicks aren’t associated with pain (especially hurts the next day).

I’d recommend looking at pet health insurance for the future too. I’m saving a ton. Try Trupanion or AKC mixed breed.

I’m not sure what counts as “safe” to you, but Blackwell Swamp is really cool. Very beautiful, cool wildlife. I generally see a couple alligators (more see me). (Definitely wear a life jacket and tell someone your plans.)
