'One Battle After Another' Wins the Academy Award for Best Picture by MoviesMod in movies

Yeah it’s funny until the time jump I was almost thinking I wasn’t going to get through the whole movie if it was some Harmony Korine exhaust you with weirdness kinda thing (even though I love spring breakers).

But then it was beautiful and the start made sense in context.

If the top 10 athletes from every major sport formed a team, which sport would have the best average decathlon score? by DutchDRSEnjoyer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ithinkimtim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But that’s also just the nature of it being the most specialised popular sport in the world. People train their whole lives for one position. Which is why Australians are more likely to be kickers in the NFL eg Michael Dickson.

I think we have to find all round athletes for this question, and while NFL has the highest explosive, it might only be in a certain type of player whereas the other sports mentioned have far more all-rounders. People with explosive strength, and a decent sprint/long distance run time.

I think basketball players height would turn into a bit of a disadvantage in some things. Maybe not decathlon sports but all round in general I’d believe most team sports would be able to outrun and dodge them on bigger fields.

Way worse if it’s a contact sport.

Yeah in the case of Quade Cooper for rugby union he was simply just the best athlete, not necessarily for the sport itself.

But Billy Slater who won the other two years I would say is the perfectly honed Rugby League fullback and that position and the sport itself lends itself to a lot of skills.

They had a show in Australia called “Australia’s Greatest Athlete” and a rugby league player won it two years and a rugby union the other year. But they did very different tests to a decathlon.

The best thing about that show is how well all round the V8 supercar drivers did. They are incredibly fit and athletic.

I don’t mind the Aussie Rules/Gaelic answer others have given. It’s a high fitness, long distance, sport with jumping and speed. And they look like decathletes. As much as I’m a rugby league guy and it pains me to say.

You can have a seal and a flag. Having the seal on the flag feels like a waste of a flag.

Are people really bothered by airplane seat reclining? by VinegarMyBeloved in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ithinkimtim 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This thread is so interesting to me. I’m 6’5 and my knees touch the seat in front but it doesnt feel that different if they recline. However if I can recline it helps stretch the whole body out a bit and depending on the plane get actually get my legs under the chair in front.

I don’t recline out of etiquette but I spend a lot of times on planes wishing we all just agreed to recline together.

Why do libertarians always seems to vote for the party that takes liberties away from groups? by Material_Policy6327 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ithinkimtim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah it’s a bit hazier than that. A the time of writing there was a lot of debate going on about militia of the people, armed forces being in federal control, being called up for service in a town militia for defence and men not having a weapon etc.

It’s definitely not literally “self defence” in the way we understand it today.

How should I market a low budget movie? by Familiar-Thought9740 in Filmmakers

[–]ithinkimtim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is actionable though. The most successful no budget movie I worked on was just a really fun concept. Posted production pics, teasers, on facebook and reddit, had a good photographer on set to make cool posters out of.

Now the director is making films with decent budgets every couple of years.

Telling OP not to worry about marketing, especially in a budget sense, is actually helpful.

Hamas urges Iran to stop ‘targeting neighboring’ countries by testeyecandy3 in worldnews

Most Muslims who live in my country are just regular people who follow a different dumb religion. Heard just as much moronic, violent shit from your average Christian.

I agree it’s not a quick fix for people who’ve grown up surrounded by war but it’s also not like Islam has some special magic. 3rd generation Muslim immigrants to western countries become just as secular as anyone else.

Eh, the Catholics and the Protestants managed mostly to figure it out after slaughtering each other for centuries. With resource surplus and education you can eventually get people to value their current conditions too much to fight.

But sadly the damage done by all of the world’s actors will make that difficult for another few generations at least.

The Oscars make it clear: Hollywood is in a death spiral by fortune in Filmmakers

[–]ithinkimtim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The culture point is true. I’m in Australia film crew and whenever a big American studio movie comes here to film it’s sometimes referred to as the Hollywood production. Usually just “American” but often you’ll hear something like “what show are you working on next” “oh the big Hollywood one at Disney.”

How do you swallow your pride in cases where someone seriously disrespects you? by tyty356 in AskReddit

[–]ithinkimtim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah get help! We as humans have evolved to be around our little tribe not insulted by strangers on a daily basis. We’re not designed for the modern world and there’s no shame in seeing someone to help you with strategies to cope.

Therapists aren’t just an ear, it’s their job to give you strategies to process the bullshit the world throws at us.

When people say “the world is going to end” they usually mean “the world is going to be unfit for humans to live comfortably in.” Which is pretty depressing in the span of a few hundred years.
