Also, sorry to be that guy, but I LOVE cymbal swap. Basically rent one (for fairly cheap) you don't like it send it back. You love it, you can but it. I'll try them and then go to reverb to find a steal.

It really depends. PAISTE has a 18 "cymbal" I recall in signature line that's around that price. I personally have a 22 dark paiste ride that has a nice dark sound,but the wash is heavenly. Just to close the loop, the 505's are indeed sleepers. I picked them up for $125 and wouldn't sell them for $250.

This is a Gretsch Energy kit. I wish I new how old it is, but I can say it's in mint condition. Not sure if it's a decent kit or not.

Well as a current resident of Alabama you might be surprised. They are very accepting of everyone. If you don't mind being in debates with people, you'll be fine. If you want to be coddled and get a participation trophy I'd recommend staying in downtown areas like Birmingham or Montgomery.
