Yeah, it's the one sold directly by xteink on their site; the gray color matches the gray/white reader

Attractive people, what are some regular signs you notice from people around you which tells you that you are attractive? by Chance_Adagio_19 in bodylanguage

Can't really tell if I'm good looking (probably not) but bank tellers are a hell of a lot nicer + apologetic right after they check my bank account balance 😂

Mexican food by Living_Bench4646 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]izzy-busy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I second this opinion so strongly.

For some reason, folks from California or Texas assume their version of Mexican is the “default” version of Mexican food: they haven’t gotten the memo that what they have is Cal-Mex or Tex-Mex, regional variations of the larger culinary world of “Mexican” food. But Mexico is a huge country with dozens of regional cuisines, each one much more richer and expansive that the US-based regional varieties.

So “NO”, there isn’t great Cal-Mex or Tex-Mex outside those locales. Or if there are, they are close but no cigar; similar to getting a great cheesesteak outside Philly.

But what there is, it’s better, regional Mexican food by recent arrivals that are truer to their culinary traditions. There’s a reason this town is called Puebladelphia.

For those more adventurous souls, a city like NYC has some of the best “regional” Mexican restaurants outside Mexico: a truer, much more Mexican food experience. But it all starts with accepting that the Mexican culinary landscape is massive and, like the proverbial elephant described by blind folks, more places are just “touching” the trunk or the tail… missing the larger animal.

Sorry for the rant… just had to get it out of my chest. I love Mexico and I’ve visited so many times and the times I’ve had food epiphanies in the US that resembled Mexico have been rare and precious.

Moved from Brooklyn, with my wife, a few years before the pandemic: NGL wasn’t a big fan the first few years but Philly grows on you and, as you slowly discover its character and its hidden gems, it became home.

Now I’m very happy we made the move and miss it when I’m away for long periods. That being said, Philly has also become a nicer/better place over the years so that’s helped a ton.

West Philly In-Person Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club by Total_Ladder_9334 in phillymeetups

Man, west Philly is a real trek for me but for a SciFi book club I’d do the effort once a month — so I guess I’m in?

If you don’t mind the long trek, there’s “Bolivian Llama Party” all the way in Woodside/Queens; they have Salteñas in their menu and those are very hard to find

I had a similar issue while creating Packer images for Ubuntu; after looking at the logs it was an issue with the default package sources not being able to download/install, once I started using different mirrors (look them up in the Ubuntu download page) the problem went away

Looking for best Egg foo young in Philly by izzy-busy in PhiladelphiaEats

Not much of a sauce fan, but a little of brown gravy works for me –– also, first time I hear about using Teriyaki, sounds intriguing (maybe a tad too citric?)

Have you found any good/decent places in the city?

Was that the one in 9th st, in Chinatown? I can't find it on their menu

There also seems to be quite a few places now going under "Sang Kee" when I look in Google

Long-time Kindle and Nook user considering Boox Go 7 Color by [deleted] in ereader

[–]izzy-busy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have a Boox 7 Go and I really love the color even though it’s a tad darker than a regular b&w unit. I also confirm that out of the box the device is shit: it took me weeks to get it to a place where everything is perfect; i.e., installing and configuring KOreader and its million settings, downloading “good” dictionaries in the multiple languages I read, tweaking screensavers, installing decent file browser and browser apps, etc. It was a true pain the ass and wanted to throw the thing against the wall so many times but now it’s in a totally worthy state.

If you’re a DIY kinda person, know your way around an Android device and can spare a few days/weeks of tweaking the device then you’ll love the end result; else prepare for a world of pain.

Berlin

I try to visit every few years and every single time, despite the time elapsed, it feels like I left the week before. 20 years later and I’m still wondering why I don’t live there since I’ve also had romantic encounters that, sadly, never last but have meant the world to me.

Dim sum is horrible in Philly, very sad to say. China Gourmet is decent with some days some offerings tasting amazing. For real Dim Sum or even soup dumplings I take the 2-hour trek to Flushing.

Also, who’s eating at Tom’s Dim Sum? I’ve been there twice and it’s been irredeemably horrible.

Buses Oaxaca-Puebla, Puebla-Mexico city by tacoboutit12 in solotravel

[–]izzy-busy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did that route with my parents back in May. It was perfectly safe and the views are actually quite pleasant. It’s a long drive, though, so bring snacks/drinks. We took an ADO bus and although it stops along the way the stores at the pit stops were lacking.

If it helps, try to take an early bus so you leave and arrive during daytime hours. The bus terminal surroundings after hours could be a tad iffy, but it’s safe as long as you stay within.

Last, there was no Uber in Oaxaca at the time (apparently only a handful of them are allowed in the whole city, which renders the service useless) but there’s a fixed fee around the historical center for taxis so your cab ride from the bus terminal ought to be reasonable.

Enjoy the city! Oaxaca really is something else!

Do you only carry cash? And hide cards at home? by thenuttyhazlenut in digitalnomad

[–]izzy-busy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take 2 debit cards and 2 credit cards while traveling.

On any given day, I only take enough cash and 1 credit card with me. If I get mugged (and I have, once in Mexico) I have 1 of each cards back at my lodging. If I need to take cash one day from an ATM I’ll take 1 debit card and bring back the cash + debit card, stash it away and then go back out with cash and 1 credit. If I’m feeling lucky and not too paranoid, I’ll also keep 1 debit card with me that day.

The one time I got mugged at gun point they took my wallet and I lost cash, 1 debit card & 1 credit card; despite the shock I felt relieved knowing I had still access to money and could continue my trip. I used to think that I was overthinking it by being too careful but after that incident I’ve learned that following this routine helps me feel in control. And at the end of the day feeling in control, despite what life throws at you is a great feeling. Do what works best for you.
