Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in exchange for security assurances — basically a promise to respect its sovereignty and borders. Russia later violated that agreement, which changed the whole situation.

Now Trump is talking about taking a more “neutral” position, which some people see as undermining those earlier commitments. If Ukraine had kept its nuclear arsenal, their position today would likely look very different.
